Age of Hawaiian shirt and how to clean collar?

I just thrifted this vintage Hawaiian shirt and was wondering how old it might be. I’m thinking 1950s based on the boxy cut as well as the length of the collar points and the label. The buttons appear to be metal. There is also some information on the selvedge edge of the fabric. It has some yellowing around the collar that I would like to try and remove, what would be the safest way to get that out? Any help would be appreciated!

ohhh, nice one, Joji!!

that's a protea flower, by the way. these two-tone huge florals were often considered Tahitian inspired. those are cool buttons, too, and they do look older than the "petroglyph" metal buttons that were used widely in the 60s, so 50s may be accurate, however, this style of aloha shirt has been popular for decades (and still is).

In the 80s when I attended UH Manoa for fashion design, one of our first senior sewing challenges was to cut a standard aloha shirt in the least amount of fabric possible. It was a standard, basic pattern without a deep dropped arms eye or oversized body which was popular at that time: it was an industry standard mens aloha shirt pattern. (which looks just like yours)

Yes, super find!

My best solution for soaking out not-so-recent sweat stains wherever they might be has been an oxygen-based non-chlorine bleach, or hydrogen peroxide 3%. For me, these actually have worked to remove bleach-set, decades-old, angry yellow underarms stains in white cotton blouses. Specific products for sweat stains did not work better for me and are made of much more hazardous ingredients. Remember, if an oxygen bleach or peroxide seems to work a little, give it more time. Also, all caveats about washing fabric, such as dye bleed testing, should be observed.

(that's actually a cut and paste from my book #shamelesspromotion)

Mary, that is super interesting and helpful information! I did some more digging and it looks like this might be a knock off of a print called Pua Lani Pareau designed by Alfred Shaheen. From what I can tell, he released the print around 1955. These are just some examples I found online, the prints vary somewhat but are very similar.

Maggie, also super helpful advice, I will definitely proceed with caution and spot test first before proceeding with your methods. Removing the stains isn’t a huge issue to me but it would be nice to get them at least a little lighter.

Thank you both for your help!
