Alligator satchel? Help identify please

Hi, folks. I have been getting SO much information from this forum. Since I know you are all so knowledgeable, can I get some help. I just got this bag, and I'm not sure what to make of it.

Is it real alligator? It's certainly leather. The inside is suede. It seems to be a fairly high quality, but there are no tags. The hardware is brass (?) and in great shape. The bag even smells good, like great old leather.

It measures 14.5 inches wide, 10 inches tall, and 4 inches deep. The handle is worn, and needs a repair. Can anyone identify it (maker or skin)?

I'm certainly no expert on the subject, :) but I think it is stamped leather. It looks to me like parts of the pattern on the handle have straightened or flattened out. As well, if you look closely at the pattern on both sides of the seam on the body of the purse, even though it isn't lined up 100% parallel to each other, you can see it looks much the same. That said....I have been known to be wrong before! :D

looks like stamped/embossed to me, too...esp where it wraps around the top? its smooth where normally on an edge like that the scales can/will be more defined, even "flake" open a bit.

i'd use a bit of leather lotion on the handle where it shows a whisper of wear; it will help keep it more supple.

nice looking bag; kind of doctor's bag shape....

Yep, embossed leather it is. I can't find any evidence of the alligator "belly button," so we'll make that unanimous :)

Any thoughts, anyone, on maker? Hence, value?

The stitching is undone in the center of the handle, like where your hand goes when it's carried. Should I invest in having it restitiched at a shoe shop, try a dab of glue, or leave it for a buyer to sort out?

I'm no expert in the purse department, but I could not pass up this bag! Thanks, in advance:)
