Am I a 40's dress? and WWYD?

Am I a 40\'s dress? and WWYD?

I so love this dress.. The styling is fabulous, little spaghetti straps concealed under pleated chiffon, prong set rhinestones on the applique'. I'm guessing 40s?

it has a side metal zip, but constructed in white thread, which is really odd in a red dress. seams are not pinked.

Glen-Joan label, not in resource.

Sadly, it is full of moth bites. Mainly in the chiffon, and they are actually hard to find as the chiffon is so full. If it fit, I would wear it in a heart beat, as they really aren't that noticeable, but its definitely damaged badly. Been in the freezer for a few months. One side of the chiffon skirt is badly faded from hanging, again, lost in the fullness. It just breaks my heart.

Should I list it as a study?

What a shame, it's gorgeous. Fade is the worst! You could list as a study piece...maybe something can be done about the faded section, depending on how much of it there is, like cutting it away and re-sewing? I dunno. :clueless:

that really is a fabulous dress, and oh what a shame!

it WOULD be a lovely costume piece, and it COULD be a study piece for a design student to see how that front draping bodice was constructed

or agreed, it could be lovely for stage, possibly...

ok.. costume piece it is!

GREAT suggestion Kim.. ironically, or should i say "luckily" after i read your post i checked, and the fading is almost dead on the side seam under the zipper all the way down, and it looks like it really can be taken in just maybe over an inch and the fading wont show! thank you!!

i know you guys hate discussing price, but if anyone has one in mind, can you please U2 me? i'm at a loss, and want to do it on RL or maybe let Melissa do it on her etsy shop; so there's not much room to play with there like it would be on ebay.

thanks again girls!

btw, if you ARE going to market as a costume piece, i would sit on it until at least August for pre-Halloween shoppers. it really is gorgeous....

price wise, yikes...i have a hard time pricing "project", study &/or costume pieces. it actually might do surprisingly well on ebay especially if you disclose the flaws well as it really does photograph beautifully.

That's a fabulous dress - I think it's been dyed, and that's why the stitching is white.

I'm interested in buying it as is - if you're looking for an easy sale please send me a U2U.

oh Nicole! thank you! you're solving my "problem".. i cant bear to do ebay, and am deathly afraid of selling it to someone not understanding the issues.

U2-ing you right now. :)
I'm thrilled to have it go to a good home.

Von, just checking in after being away over the holiday, and gotta say, wow!!!! What a fantabulous piece! And I'm glad for Nicole she grabbed it, but I'd have been sorely tempted to make you an offer as is, and take in that side seam. Sounds like it would be fixable to make this wearable. Gorgeous..... and my favorite color, too!

I am not sure about the date of this dress. It may be late 1940's. I would like to have seen the lining, the label and the zip and/or some interior seams. Primary colours were popular at the beginning of the 1950's and chiffon began to be used by designers for evening wear. However, I would agree the white stitching is odd. If it is silk chiffon it could have been professionally dyed but the thread would likely not be a natural fibre because the dye didn't take.
