Am I smoking crack to think this fur is 40s?

... question in the title really. I may have asked this before, but now I need to offload it and give an opinion.

The main thing that makes me think this is the high shoulder shape. It may have been individually made in the north of Britain, and during rationing too, so bear in mind it could be a bit idiosyncratic. The one time I've worn it was on top of a late 30s velvet bias gown, and it kind of fitted with the style quite well...

Also, the best I've heard re: type of fur is fox, perhaps. Any advances on that?

Thanks for any thoughts!

If it was made in Britain during the war, fur wasn't rationed - it was a luxury item and taxed heavily but you could buy a full length fur coat if you wanted to without any coupons. There was a lot of fur coming through Britain at the time. Norway, which was under Nazi occupation, was selling much of its farmed fox to neutral Sweden who was selling it on to the U.S. via Britain. So quality fox furs would not have been difficult to get at the time.

That's very interesting about the fur supply, Jonathan, thanks.

Good to know I have two 'yeses' on the fox, so I can add that...

Now, date... there's no label on this, and it's quite plainly made, which is why I think it was individually made for someone locally. Shall I just compromise and say 40s-50s?

thank you!
