Am I way off base with this dress?

I think this is one of the prettiest party dresses I've ever had.

I've listed it 2-3 times with what I thought was a reasonable starting price - no takers. :clueless:

Have I mis-dated it? I think 50's but it is longer (perhaps a tall size?), the rhinestones are set with metal prongs pushed through the fabric, no tags whatsoever, pinked seams, side metal zip.

Any thoughts or advise greatly appreciated!

Sorry!

The neckline does not quite have that 40's 50's look they looking for.... Also spring is in the air.... I have a few dresses likeit and Iam goingto hold off until winter... It s a darling dress.... But Ebay is a fikle creature.

It's beautiful! Is it a petite? It looks quite shortwaisted on your (probably Amazonian) mannequin. If you have access to a petite model, it might be worth reshooting.

This dress is from around 1948 and maybe just later. I'd like a closer look at the fabric just in case it is rayon crepe. It's a classic dress of that period because it shows the transition from the styling of the 1940-45 period with the fabric, the rhinestone details - especially those great pockets - and into the next half of the decade where the dress length increases, the shoulder padding is reduced and the sleeve is shorter. The neckline becomes less structured.

As to describing the dress - well I suppose the difficulty is that you can't say "1940's" without people thinking of what was the typical silhouette for 1939-1945 and you can't say "New Look" either -1947. I would however call it a cocktail dress rather than a party dress. Those in the know will get it and others will like it for what it is - a great vintage dress.

yes, it does look short waisted, but it is adorable! classic lbd, nice!

ebay is so annoying...some of the carp that gets huge dollars, and a keeper like this not getting squat, just bugs the bajoozies outta me

Sharon, your dress is just lovely! But it seems that these 40's black crepe dresses with all the pretty rhinestone and/or beaded detailing can be all over the board on eBay, at any one point in time. I've seen them go up over $100, and down under $20....

I had an I. Magnin crepe, not designed quite like yours but with a similar "feel" and shape to it, and of the same age. It had an unusual, beautiful neckline and really pretty beaded & rhinestone accents. And, to boot, it was about a size 12. I could not sell that dress for the life of me for the longest time, even though several very similar to it had sold for up to around $125. I had it on eBay, then in my Ruby Lane shop. Finally sold it on eBay and got dirt cheap for it. My buyer loved it and raved over how much nicer it was "in person."

If you can get a live model for it, I would try that; somehow these seem to show much better on a real person. Also, at one point, these were listed with the KW "tea dress," even though they seem to formal for tea, to me anyway. That seemed to garner a lot of activity.

It's a fabulous dress, and if you can't get a decent price for it, just hang on to it till you can!

Thanks so much everyone for your thoughts, suggestions and compliments!

I just adore this dress and simply cannot bring myself to let it go for cheap~

I'm busy as a one armed paper hanger right now so I just popped in for a minute - wanted to thank you guys for taking a look!
