I saw this story via my University Alumni facebook page (yes I went to the same college as Alexander McQueen! Though not at the same time, or even the same course.)

The skirt is made from horsehair!

They reckon £35k. I wonder how accurate that estimate will turn out to be?

I love the idea behind the dress, and the horsehair mane. Even with the provenance, 35K pounds seems terribly high to me. Isn't that over 50K American dollars? I have my doubts it will go that high. I have not seen a piece of vintage couture go for that much in long time. Of course, I do not follow all the auctions, so who knows?

I heard someone call it the "double suicide" dress. Sad, but true.

I have to agree, there is a high ickiness factor with the dress... Remember the auction after the two Suzis were murdered? I couldn't bid on anything....

They were a mother/daughter team of vintage clothing dealers from Virginia (very southern with BIG drawly accents) who were big on the vintage clothing circuit in the 1980s. I met them a couple of times and the younger Suzi sometimes sold things to the Bata Shoe Museum and me. It must have been the mid 90s when they were killed by the younger Suzi's ex-husband in the store's back room. He used an axe. The auction of the stock a year later didn't appeal to me and she had the BIGGEST hoop crinoline from about 1860 that I had ever seen and they are not easy to come by - it must have been 5 feet across.

Did you catch the Four Rooms episode with the dress made from human hair? (watch it here) A Hairdresser made it for a Miss (town etc.) contestant as one of the categories was to make a recyclable garment.
