I went to the Public Library again today to continue my Louisville Clothing Stores research project. I made great progress in city directories and even got to spend about an hour in the microfilms of the city papers. I odubt I will get through those - we are talking years of viewing.
But what was great were the newspaper clipping files, which had a lot of information I must have missed when I looked there 2 years ago..
But here's the hairs up on the back of my neck BEST thing:
Back in 1997, I rescued a really fine ca 1895 gown from the University of Lousiville TAS costume storage. I traded for it. The condition wasn't superb, but it was a grand taupe wool gown with deep green velvet vestee and upper sleeves and more black jet beading than you would believe. And it had a Worth label. I was authoritativly told it was a fake. And I think it was. But the construction was certainly Worth quality. I sold it in 1999 to a collector friend in Indianapolis.
Today I find a file with clippings concerning clothing. And there in a Louisville Times 1949 Magazine article is a full page color photo of a gal wearing that very dress for a 1902 wedding re-enactment. It's undoubtedly the same dress!
The article even notes that it was a Paris dress and who loaned it for the shot and where she lived. I got a Xerox of the photo- lousy qualty, but a shot nonetheless and I will be mailing it to my friend in Indianapolis.
He will be amazed. To find some provenance 10 years later!
Very, Very Cool.
