Amazing womens jacket! Help me date please :)

This coat is amazing, real fur, its still very very soft. Has no other tags besides the one shown, and no sign of one being removed anywhere, even in the pockets. It is definitely wool. I have no idea where it came from, and no one in my family seems to remeber. The fur collar looks like it was either hand stitched to put back on, or its hand stitched and falling apart. I'm not to sure about that part. I've never heard of Muriels. I looked it up and the only thing I really found was the company name being mentioned in an obituary stating Muriels Womens Clothing, if its even the same company. I think the fur is fox, but my better half thinks its coyote. If anyone can help me figure out when this coat was from and the fur and all those wonderful things I would be forever grateful! It's a really great coat that was hidden away for a long time! It's in great condition, besides the collar.

I would have said 1960s from the shape and that flecked wool weave, the collar was likely removed so the coat could be dry cleaned, they are attached this way for that purpose. It looks original to me as the lining of the collar matches the coat.

Do you know what the fur might be? I've never seen or been around real fur items before, so I have no idea. We looked in the fur guide and that's how we came to the conclusion of fox or coyote. I also found a lisiting for a jacket on Etsy that says its from Muriels, 1960, but they didn't seem to know too much about the clothing company.

I don't sorry, I've hardly handled furs myself, but I think you're heading in the right direction. I'm sure some of our other members more knowledgeable on furs will be along shortly to help.

Do you have a photo of the label you can show us please?

Thank you for posting the pic of the label - I generally associate that flecked tweed with the '40s and the label looks '40s too but I would really like to see the shape of the coat being worn - it looks shapeless (and hence '60s) on the hanger. Are you able to show what it looks like when worn on a person of the right size?

Alternatively, if you can post measurements: bust, waist, hips, total length, it will help as we can work out the proportions from there.

I'm not a fur expert but to my uneducated eye it looks like fox. I agree with Melanie that these collars are often removable for cleaning, which is great as it means that non-fur lovers (like myself) can remove them and enjoy the coat without them.

Nicole I thought the fleece lining was unusual but it's clearly original, have you seen this before this early?

It definitely does not fit me, I am only 5" 2'. I had my dear put it on, that is the closest I am going to get with it being worn on the proper size. :/
The length is 42", the bust is about 20", waist was about 22". The widest it gets is 24" at the the very bottom of the jacket.
The color does look 60's to me, but I thought it seemed older than that because of the label too. There are three sets of buttons, we missed the very top two in the picture.

Sorry to keep asking for photos but can you lay it down on the floor with all the buttons fastened, as this is how it was intended to be worn and what we really need to see.
Until I read there were more buttons I was going to ask if it had been altered from a single to a double breasted fastening, as something about the alignment is a little off, this may be sorted once it is fully fastened however.

Melanie, I can't tell from the pics if the lining is original but it looks like a knitted acrylic so that points to more modern I would think: but then, I live in a hot country - we don't have fleecy interiors here! Heck, many places don't even wear coats full stop.

Do you mean bust 40", waist 44", 48" at the hem? It doesn't sound wide enough for a swing style, definitely isn't fitted so the measurements could suggest a '60s fit but it would still be much easier if it could be seen when worn.

The style looks quite mannish and I take it that's your husband wearing it? If you're 5ft 2inches you're a good vintage height: I'd still like to see you wearing it - and Melanie has a good point about the buttons. Can you tell if the button holes and button placement are all original? Post close up pics if you're not sure.

The button holes look original. I'll post pictures of the measurements and everything else shortly.

ok. So here are the photos of me wearing this. Sorry, before I just measured it flat, and forgot to double it. We measured it again while I was wearing it and it was 42" bust, 42" waist and 46" hip. Though keep in mind I am 18 weeks pregnant. image.jpg

Thanks for all the input ladies! I still wish I knew the exact fur type, but I didn't know they were removable! That's pretty neat, as I don't wear fur either!

Hi there, I am a bit uncertain as to the age of this coat. The flecked tweed lining, the button style, and the pocket style make me think 50s. If it were a men's coat I would I would say the shape seemed 50s to be too. I have not seen fleece linings in women's coats before like this so I am unsure of dating based on that. I can't see the shape I usually see in women's 50s coats while being worn but when it's laying down the shape looks 50s. While it's on the shape of the coat and the sleeves look early 60s to me.

I can tell you the fur type of the collar which is raccoon. :)

Overall I am able to more easily identify fur types because I have handled them and studied them quite a bit over the years and being my business is online I see them a lot online as well.
Your collar shows markings and coloration that make it easily identifiable to me. I am also able to tell from how the individual guardhairs look both on top and underneath along the seam edges and how much density the fur shows in the photos.
