And a Dress Distress....

Sorry, one more dating (could also use help w/KW!) question. This dress may be a homemade--no tags of any kind--but professionally done--more like a custom tailored. Black wool, metal zipper in back, undersized dolman-type sleeve, and an unusual split panel at the skirt. Does this look like early 60's, late 50's. I don't think the belt is original to the dress, but I like it with it, anyway. Jet black, but am showing lightened photos for detail! Thanks again!

Hi!

I know you don't know me but I am a vinty! Just haven’t been here in a while!

I totally get a late 40's feel from you dress! Just My opinion......but I do like it and think it’s very pretty and professional looking,….great for office wear or special occasion!!

Hi by the way I am Jackie :spin:

Thanks, Jody! Just the fabric "look & feel" itself led me to that opinion initially, but I have some older dresses with similar styling. I think I shall settle on late 50s; I need to learn to usually go by my "first" impression & not overthink these things! I fret too much, I fear!

Hi,

This dress is a classic (always difficult to date)
Check the underarms.
Dresses will usually have gussets in the under arm area during the 'New Look' years. The bodice would fit snug, so gussets were needed to fit the underarm. Same sleeves and bodice in the 80's would be worn looser, with lower armholes, and not need gussets.
Is the belt original? If it is from the 50's, the backing will probably be leather, (or maybe sized fabric) -vs- vinyl in the 80's.
Construction: any overlocking used?

Good luck with this project--
Jennifer

Well, it sold overnight via my buy-it-now price, so I sure hope I listed it properly! The underams didn't have the same kind of gusseting as in my late 40's/early 50's dress I have up now, but though it was styled to be just slightly oversized, it did have a gusset of sorts under the arms. So I do think 50's, definitely not 80's by the look & feel of the fabric and the back metal zipper.... I do think the belt was added later, though, because it was not as wide as the thread loops would have accommodated!

Thanks for your input--I am always learning!

l would sy this is the svelt silhouette some chose instead of the dior new look, so l would say around 1956-59...
