And talking of novelty prints, does this look late 40s to you?

It's not too clear, but I think it's actually a fox-hunting novelty print, because of the crop and horn(?) element.

It's actually silk or a silk blend, with a side metal Talon zip. That neckline is repeated on the back. I'm blanking tonight, what can I call the collar? And does it look late-ish forties to you? All I can think about is National Velvet....

I wonder since its sans fox or hounds it is just "hunter/jumper" versus foxhunting But I guess the horn would clinch it. I wonder if more equestriennes search horse jumping versus fox hunting.

I am trying to think of the collar too... and i know i know it but am drawing a blank. its not the right angle to be a true portrait collar...oh darn....what is it..

It's definitely a horn, it's one of those nasty English (no offense!) hunting horns that plays one note and has a tone like a party favor. I've always contended that the wise fox simply perished from the lack of aesthetic sounds emitted from these instruments. Oh sorry, got me going! It's a fabulous dress though! I would estimate late 40s.

If I had to name the collar at gun point I'd probably blurt out "flat pointed collar" but that would be under duress.

Fantastic dress! Yes to late 40s, foxhunting motif (but I think if you wanted to go with the national velvet angle too - mid 40s was that? - it would be justified, it could just be a little Liz Taylor under that riding hat :) ..)

Thanks guys - yes, it's the little cap that keeps making me think of Liz trying on the jockey outfit before the race.

National Velvet was '44, so arguably nicely placed to foreshadow this kind of style for the next 2-5 years or so.

You're right, Chris, no foxes and no hounds, so, hey, they could be following beagles, otters, stags or anything! I suspect the horn is there more as a balancing motif for the crop than any stalwart statement of countryside-rampagement (if that's a word).

And in the 40s, any kind of horseriding might imply a kinship with hunting - there wasn't the same division of feeling that there is now, I think.

If I had to name the collar at gun point haha! I guess we all feel like that sometimes...!

Rosine, thanks - I've always thought of peter-pan as slightly rounder - this seems almost a hybrid between peter-pan and sailor... :puzzled:

My first thought on collar was Peter Pan and then sailor. Describing it as a hybrid between Peter Pan and sailor. That gives a good visual. I love the fabric and would agree later 1940s.

Right, I've gone with everyone's ideas and it's listed! There's a free gallery and subtitle day on co.uk, so I'm trying to take advantage with what I've got prepped...

Looks like a modified pointed flat as Maggie said. The collar itself is a pointed flat but the neckline is scooped a bit.

Thanks Marie (& Margaret for being on the money)!
