Another Mystery For Me

I have this lovely Avon Fashions Jacket done in a satin (faux) either polyester or another type material not sure as it is not on the label. I am wondering what is the year or era of this jacket. Also what would you call this eg. brocade or embroidered trim, I am just not getting it? I know its not brocade but for a better lack of what it is???
Thanks as always for your generous help.

It doesn't read like silk on screen, but you would have to determine that yourself. The most conclusive way is burn testing. What I meant was there is no such thing as 'faux' satin, just satin made of different things.

Yes I knew that was what you meant and thanks for all your help I truly appreciate it :) I have a hard time with materials, espcially if they don't have a label on. It feels like is something I say a lot, but that doesn't help in sales

I agree with Ruth on all accounts and would like to recommend that a good place to learn about fabrics is a fabric shop! You can walk around, feeling and looking at the fabrics, have a guess at what their composition is and then look at the label.

I've started taking swatches so that I can help my staff learn about the different types. I agree with Ruth that you should spend some quality time with the Fabric Resource: it's terrific!

I wonder if this jacket was a uniform for '80s Avon ladies?

It looks like that Avon (cosmetics) was also already selling clothes in the 80s... didn't know that, but I googled around a bit, and found quite a few 80s items on ebay and other sites with this or a similar label. A label like this was posted here on the label image thread in 2010 - I couldn't see the picture anymore when clicking on the link to the forum, but Google seems to have it in it's "memory". Check out Avon's history here - the Avon 80s logo is the same.

Good suggestions about learning about fabrics. Please remember fiber -silk, cotton, wool, polyester, etc., etc. - is what the fabric is made of. The weave is how the fiber is put together - satin, taffeta, tweed, etc., etc. Enjoy your learnings.

I wore Avon fashions to work a lot in the 80s--I really loved it. Moderately priced, but wore like iron and so much of it was great for career attire. I had two dresses in particular that I wish I still had. They had swimwear, shoes, etc., as well.

Your jacket definitely looks 80s, and I'm positive it wouldn't be silk. Avon, to the best of my knowledge and remembrance, would not have made anything, or much of anything, in silk. It's possible they may have had some more expensively priced special occasion wear in silk, but I don't remember any.... Your jacket presents, as Ruth says, as polyester.

Their apparel line was bought out by Newport News. Not sure when, but maybe in the mid 90s? Can't quite remember.

I just wanted to add the fabric label was probably in the matching dress/skirt or blouse, as I have had only one care label per set before.

Thank you all for help in solving his mystery of mine. I will follow all suggestions, especially buying swatches of material to get a better feel and knowledge. :)
