Another puzzling dress

It almost seems to me that two different people made this dress. The outer dress was made by someone who was more skilled and paid attention to detail, and the inside liner was made by someone who didn't give a squat. lol Either way, I think it's homemade. All the beads are sewn on. Very subtle thread over the tops of the larger beads. I think the sheer fabric might be tulle.

And not to sound like a crazy person, but it has the exact same smell to it as a few of my older dresses, which makes me want to ask if anyone else ever notices a particular smell to dresses from the 20s and 30s. It's not a bad smell, but a distinct one that I pick up from every older dress I know of, regardless of where I find them and what fabric they are made from.

Anyway, maybe it's a costume?

Oh, another thing. My dress form has huge shoulders because it's collapsible and the fabric is torn on each shoulder. It's on my list to fix it. Anyway it's keeping the dress from hanging looser than it might otherwise because of the shoulders and that the dress is too small for the dress form.

Thank you. I knew I would somehow end up buying something like this eventually because I keep running into this type of clothing and they're always so fantastic, with the colors and embellishments. lol

I agree it's an Indian Salwaar Kameeze and quite often the individual components are purchased seperately in a shop - border fabric by the metre and handmade embellishements sewn on patches - and taken to a tailor who makes it up to your size. I've seen an Indian tailor work like this in person. They're pretty amazing.
