Carol cohen for braefair

Seems to be from the 1960s bc she didnt start working with them until the mid 60s.

Cant find much on braeton and braefair on internet. Braeton was a men suits and jackets line then braefair was started later by irving Rubinstein and his brother in the 60s i believe. The cut of this coat just looks so late 50s to me. Its hard to believe its mid 60s. What do yall think? The fur is real. I tested it.

I will add some better photos tomorrow when its light out.

I think there's a good chance that this coat could be from the seventies. I did a quick search on Newspapers.com for "Carol cohen for braefair" and "coat" and the earliest result was 1972. Toggle buttons like these were really popular in the seventies and the princess silhouette was fairly common. It's a beautiful coat, nice find!

Thank you. I couldn't find out any info on this cut of coat from the seventies... in my mind it wouldn't be popular. Bc of the style if dresses then. No real need for a coat like this when skirts weren't really full. But i nevee thought about it coming back. I did find a newspaper article that said she started working with them in the late sixties (braefair)

Hi,

I am not seeing any princess seaming on this coat. Does the back have seaming, and can you show the back of the coat? A true princess coat would have vertical seaming that follows the lines of the body, more of a "fit and flare" with no horizontal seam at the waist. The silhouette does look more 1950s, yet I get a later feel from this one too. The horizontal seam at the waist throws off the shaping, that is the waist seam does not look like a technique one might see on a coat like this is the 1950s (well, to me anyway). I might expect no horizontal seam at the waist. It might be late 60s / early 70s, although the shape and collar treatment is not something I recall being all that popular at the time. Maybe very late 1960s? It is sort of a puzzlement to me!

It looks more 1977ish to me when the silhouette goes more romantic with longer, fuller skirts and high heeled boots with almond-shaped toes... It's conservative, but stylish, like what Phyllis Lindstrom would wear (Mary Tyler Moore's landlady neighbour) The toggles the fur cuffs and collar... I don't think it was intended for a young woman - more a middle-aged career or society audience. Do you have it over a crinoline? Because it looks fuller than I think it was supposed to look, over a full middy skirt would work, but not artificially plumped out with a crinoline.

agree, not a princess coat since that refers to the princess seaming that gives the shape, this has a definite waistline seam, as Barbara points out. I agree with Marian, it could go over a Gunne Sax dress, and also with Jonathan as to 70s for dating this.

Thank you everyone i am learning so much! Yes i agree now learning it doesnt have the correct seaming so its not a princess coat. What kind of coat is it? Just a long wool coat with a horizontal waist seam? Whats the offical type? I would say early 70s for dating.

Fit and flare?

if it was mine and I was choosing keywords for it, I would consider calling it “princess-style” so that viewers who were looking for that silhouette could find it. 50s princess coats are very pricey these days. Chances are this would appeal to a buyer who wanted the look at a friendlier asking price.

Thank you this is exactly what i wanted to accomplish with this jacket. I wanted to sell it for a affordable price . Princess coats are really expensive right now and they are very beautiful but i wouldnever be able to afford a real vintage one. Its in pretty great condition except for some fading on the fur collar. If i could close it around my waist she would be my coat to wear this winter lol. Unfortunately its too small for me.

It's a lovely coat - and the look Jonathan describes is perfect - I admit I am a sucker for those types of boots and have way too many pairs of them :hysterical:!

Personally, I would call it fit and flare. It's hard to see how long it actually is. What is the waist to hem length? Maxi to me is really only if it's ankle length at least. Calf-length would be midi.
