Antique Jacket date

Okay my turn, I wanted to narrow a date down on this antique garment. It could easily be late Victorian but I want to make sure it is not earlier or later. The owner's family collection included Edwardian dresses, Victorian, Victorian mourning pieces.. The color, material and construction feels different that late Victorian in some ways maybe? I need to go through my reference books a little better...anyway, Big Jet glass beads and a small size.

I could do with seeing it done up flat front & back - it shouts Victorian at first glance but I could be seeing the wrong shape.

Okay, I think Victorian is right it is just the buttons maybe are replaced? The fabric is a wool type velvet. The shape to me shouted Victorian but the collar and buttons made me second guess somethings. They had some cool pieces, I just want to make sure it is late Victorian like the other pieces. Thanks and if anyone else as ideas. My dress form was too big to button it but I could do so flat if needed.

Hi,

If you can show it off the dress from, just buttoned up and laid flat, front and back that would be helpful. It is hard to see the shape when it is unbuttoned, can't tell for sure, but it looks to be later Victorian around 1880s. From your photos, it looks to be made of silk plush.

Yes let me do that because I wanted to narrow it to late, mid or early Victorian. Hunch was late but again here you go- fabric feels slightly itchy like wool but it is old and really could be a plush silk. It also hooks shut (like you would expect from the era) with the buttons purely decorative. I cannot get any great pics due to the rainy weather no natural light! Here you go.

Mohair, Yes! Thank you. I don't know why I couldn't quite put it together -I'm thinking wool but I am sitting on a mohair sofa as we speak....The length is just so plush. When I got it off and actually buttoned it did help so much the shape was there and easier to see. I know these older pieces aren't always practical for wear but I do love investigating them:)

I agree - 1880s bustle era, and I suspect for outdoor wear with the mohair fabric and double breasted front.

Outdoor wear great I will definitely add that to the description. Thanks everyone I think this helps add to the history and details of the description. Sorry about the fuzzy button photo- They are thick jet glass with metal hooks embedded when made....

It's certainly 1880s in style but the construction is more in keeping with a costume piece - do you mind taking more photos? In particular, I'd like to see more of the inside, does it have boning? Can you photograph the back sitting flat so that we can see where the shoulder seams are? Also, the sleeves - are they cut straight or on a curve - are there any darts? A close up of the hooks and eyes, too please. I don't like the look of the collar and bias binding facing, but it's possible that they've been added. Also - what sort of hem does it have? Is it handsewn or top-stitched?

Thank you, extra information will help a lot.

I can do that, but it is definitely an antique piece the hooks are right and the smell is the same as the other ones really really old wood (they absorbed the all wood attic) you just can't get that with anything but age:) These came out of the family attic together which was dry and they are all about the same conservation wise. The construction, thread and type of fabric indicates the age. There are some rubs in the fabric pile. The lady was 90 something and the other Victorian and Edwardian pieces where just as expected in style. The collar could have been added in the 1900s, I'm not sure. The sleeves are on a curve, no darts - all of this is hand sewn or folded over cuffs, seams etc in a way which shows no stitching outside. Inside you can see some stitching which is disintegrating but by hand-so no topstitching except for on the details of the collar. FOR some reason couldn't get images inserted here so see the new ones in my last comment where I was able to include them!

Since I have natural light now here, these pics are exactly how it would appear on buttoned front and back - with the fabric solved and it buttoned normally off the too big dressform... I think to me it now makes sense as a late Victorian Mohair outerwear bustle era piece. I think is actually possibly all original.
