Hi, I have acquired a amazing coat that has liberty embroidered in the inside, does anyone know if this is something that Liberty actually did ? I can't find any resource with this and the piece must be at least 100 years old ? I can post a pic tomorrow if anyone wants to see. Thanks

Yes, photos would be good.

Liberty is a very old and prestigious company and produced some marvellous designs in the Victorian era. You can read about them in the VFG Label Resource here.

There are other reasons why a word such as "liberty" might be sewn into a coat though, so it will be interesting to see.

Thanks for the replies, am adding pics now

Interesting piece! Somewhere in the back of my brain I recall seeing another garment with the chain-stitched 'Liberty' label... Funny that you say its at least 100 years old - I think you might be bang on - it looks c. 1914 to me.

That's a great jacket - I would wear it now! over my evening dresses for concerts.
Liberty have great archive records, they don't have a direct e-mail address but if you send a message to [email protected] and mark it for the Archive in the subject they will make sure it gets there. They should be able to confirm if it was retailed by the Liberty and may even be able to tell you a little bit more. If you find out anything more please do let us know!

I'm no good because I think it looks like a late '40s silk taffeta dress that someone has added rows of velvet ribbon to make a big collar and cuffs for! And cut away the front and taken up most of the skirt (you can see the enormous hem) to make a jacket, perhaps because parts of it was damaged or they wanted to change the style, perhaps for a theatrical costume. And lined it in silk georgette.

This looks like one of those pieces that if you had it in your hand, you could better guess the age. Do you have any information about the fabrics or pics of the interior? Some things are hard to date but I think it's unlikely to be a Liberty of London and apologies, I can't tell much about the age so far.

Thanks circa, I'm not concerned about the age , it is 100 years old, you can tell and it came in with many other pieces from the same era, your right about the length it does look as tho it's been shortened but I do think it was always a coat, it's just the Liberty thing that threw me ?

The velvet looks antique and right for a 100 year old garment. It looks exactly like the antique silk velvet found on hats from the same time period. I cannot tell of course if it has been altered. To add to the mystery, could Liberty possibly be the name of the character in a theatrical production? I have come across a few antique garments with names of literary characters sewn in, often hand written on a tag which is sewn in, or on occasion the name is embroidered right onto the lining of the garment.

While I have only personally handled about 1 dozen actual Liberty garments, and have seen quite a number in books and museums, I do have several in my own collection dating from 1880 to 1910s and with with a variety of labels, and I have never seen anything like this. Interesting!
