Antique shawl? Rug? Ethic? Whotsit??!!!!

There are very few things that stump me and I can usually figure them out but this thing confuses me!!

It came with a large lot of c. 1900- 1960 things that I bought from a lady who had inherited her family's things throughout the years. Most of her family's things date from the late 20's to 40's but there are a few older and newer items.

This shawl thingey was with the large group of 30's- 50's scarves I bought from her but I'm not sure about the date or what it is. It's definitely silk and the cords hanging down are silk too. It's not a thin china silk but a thicker almost slubbier ribbed weave but NOT silk dupioni and deifnitely NOT crisp like taffeta.

It has that old silk smell too that silks made after the Edwardian era don't smell like. It smells antique (LOL, yes, different eras have different smells) and it's handmade. It's square but the cord tassels are only on two sides. Measures approx. 41" x 41" (not including tassel cords).

What do I have here? It looks ethnic to me.
