Antiques Roadshow moving more into Vintage Clothing

The PBS version has had clothing for awhile, though we don't see it often. I imagine it's pretty rare for anyone to bring in an item that hits the big bucks.
I believe our member Karen Augusta is one of the appraisers for clothing and textiles on the PBS version of the show.

Wow--it's very encouraging to see vintage fashions being treated as cultural artifacts, same as family heirloom antiques and collectibles, on so popular a show!

Has the show made buying for resale much more difficult for antiques dealers, or just raised the general level of interest in "old stuff"? I don't know the answer, but I'm inclined to think that more excitement about vintage as worth finding, saving, and handing to future generations can't possibly be a bad thing!

I had to cringe at this quote from the article, though: "Vintage fashion has been massively popular in the last ten years, with huge demand for labels such as Yves St Laurent from the 40s, 50s and 60s."

Does that mean we can now expect to see mega-bucks YSL WWII and New Look duds on ebay soon? :hysterical:

Did anyone see the ebay auction for an Ok cotton Mens Shaheen shirt - in a less than spectacular print that started at 6,000 ? The seller cited their Roadshow appraisal ( noting that they were t0ld it could go higher at auction !) . The shirt was worth no more than 200 on a good day !

Oh, I can definitely see it as a bad thing. We already get people trying to sell us things in the store who seem to think that their Grandma's polyester CRAP is worth big bucks. With "awareness" of the value of vintage clothing, this will likely get worse.

There's no realistic checks on shows like that -- they don't tell you what ISN'T worth money -- or that it's near impossible to get their high appraisal prices unless all the planets align. I already have people bringing in items expecting me to pay the same price I SELL items for!! They seem INSULTED that I actually intend to MAKE MONEY off their precious heirlooms (that they would have thrown away a couple years ago..)

The new series of the Roadshow - which this feature is plugging - only started last Sunday here in the UK. So I guess we'll have to wait and see what impact it will have. In my view, it will make the show more interesting to watch for vintage lovers, but I'm sure will make it more difficult to buy.

Let's face it, these days you're an expert if you've watched one episode of Bargain Hunt, or Car Booty, or some other truly rubbish daytime show. (Actually, I quite like Bargain Hunt, bit of a soft spot for Tim )

Bad choice of dress, doesn't suit our Fiona at all...

Tonight's episode featured a pair of Rayne shoes and matching handbag with Wedgwood jasper ware cameo decoration and heels in sage green. The expert liked them (he's a china man, he would) but shied away from dating them.

He didn't want to give an auction value either, but gave an insurance valuation of £800. 'Find me another pair!' he declared, while I muttered about the V&A and the Wedgwood Museum under my breath.

These are my very favourite shoes to appear in the 365 Days of Shoes calendar and I have a habit of showing the photo of them to all and sundry, most of whom have absolutely no interest in shoes, because I can't imagine how one couldn't desire them. I have longed for a pair for some time. I think that ambition might be the first victim of Antiques Roadshow Series 32. £800. My car's worth less than that.

Sorry guys, I won't flag up each and every bit of vintage and spoil the series before it gets to the US. Just feeling particularly cross about this one!
