I did ask about ALL the bags over on the VCA, but won't force you to look at all the pictures.....I had a little elderly man come into my shop & ask me to consign the bags, which after a quick glance at about 15 bags like this.....

I quickly agreed to!! I won't sell them at the shop, I figure some on eBay (store) and some on my website (save listing/FVFs). I was told over on the VCA that they all date to early 20s and older. I am going to grab a recommended book to research a little. They also said that Ruby Lane is a great place to get an idea on how to price. The prices there are fairly consistently 200 and up, but a few lower & a few WAY higher.....what I'm not sure of is how to know which to go high on & which aren't worth that much? I can show all of them if you like.....I'm also struggling to determine Victorian, Edwardian, or 20s on some. I suppose the book will help, too. The above strikes me as Edwardian, has a little mirror inside....

And is silk under the beads. I'll show a few more....working at the shop today for the Grand Opening Event and will TRY to get online when I can to see what you guys think is the best angle to take on these.....the man's wife collected them, and recently passed away. I want to do the best I can for him....he was so proud of her collection and I am really honored to get to deal with them for him (and honored that as a brand new shop, another shop in town that doesn't deal w/ clothing & accessories sent him to me rather than the other one!). Whoo!

Thanks!!!! Ang

Here's my favorite, and I imagine with what I have gathered so far perhaps the most valuable to collectors. Silk with a geisha/Asian woman on both sides....

Lastly, is this petit point? It has a very old looking metal frame, handle is pretty worn. When would it be from? He didn't think it was worth much, but I offered to sell it for him anyway.

His wife did a pretty nice job amassing a smashing collection!!! Any help would be appreciated, thanks! Ang

blimey some nice pics there clear and colourfull bags...hope you get a good deal when selling for others, l split 50/50 after fees...good luck ...and do let me know when they are listed...

Hi! Thanks....actually, my split is a little less in my favor, but I plan to go on my site so fees wont be as much an issue. I'll do a few on eBay in my store to generate attention to the ones on the site (the legal way, of course!).....

So is color a point in favor? What I'm trying to get a handle on is what collectors look for... in the way that when looking at a 40s dress, I can assess what to price it at based on label, details, size, if it has a print/color/plain black....you know? Clothing I know my customer for (to a degree anyway), but these I am not sure of. Some of them are glass beads, some cut steel....just no idea whats good/mediocre/bad.

Thanks!! I'm going to try to get some good pics w/ sunlight and with a snowstorm on the way it may be later next week that I get them listed.

I think the replies you got on the VCA were pretty accurate. The last one is not petit point, but needlepoint. Petit point is worked with thread rather than yarn. Here's a petit point I have up right now for comparison.

I'm not sure you can see the detail, but this purse is entirely worked by hand. Its not a printed or woven fabric.

Very nice collection of bags! I love the steel bead ones you posted the other day on VCA.

Hi Ang!

mary here, from story city (yes, iowa!)

i have a neighbor down the street from me who specializes in antique bags so i have left her a message to give me a call. will contact you again once i hear back from her ;)

Thanks, and hi Mary!!!! You're not far from me at all!!! Do you sell locally up there? I hit the Carousel when I'm headed north to my hometown, Fort Dodge, pretty often but dont venture into Story City beyond that. We should have lunch sometime when I'm headed up!

Thanks for the help, guys. I'm truly TRULY exhausted after a fairly busy "grand opening" event today (despite ice & snow, was steady all day & did decent sales)...also had some women bring things in for me to buy. One lady brought in a Geoffrey Beene, a Trigiere, a Parnis, an Ann Fogarty, a killer Lucie Ann with satin beaded sleeves in PINK, some Beverly Feldman heels and some no-name cut COOL 70s pants and a leather wrap skirt!! I am stunned at the vintage out there in my humble city, as well as the amount of people interested in buying/wearing/collecting! I guess I sold online so long I never thought Des Moines had many people interested (I was a hermit of sorts!). Its been an amazing couple weeks.

Thanks again! Ang
