Hey all,
I have this '60s dress by the designer Jay Kobrin. The tag reads Jay Kobrin for Maisonette. I can't seem to find any info about him except that he designed a dress that Goldie Hawn wore in a Vogue spread in 1969 (photo on the left): http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pp1D0xV0y...w/J1M6xf7BFTg/s1600/SKMBT_C20310093009300.jpg

The dress is immaculately constructed so it seems to have been a reputable brand but I really can't turn up much info. Any help would be great!

Here is a news archive article from 1970. It mentions Jay Kobrin shows his collection for the first time to the NY press. I would imagine he started then, in the late 60s.

I had a Jay Kobrin for Maisonette dress several years ago--the fabric (a heavy silk) and the workmanship were outstanding! At the time I did my research, I believe I found out that he had designed for the stage before doing commercial design. His clothing was carried in high-end stores, but it seems that he was not extremely prolific, so his stuff is pretty rare--or at least hard to find. He was the partner of a well-known artist or architect, I think--and they were famous for throwing posh parties at their home in Connecticut. I also seem to remember they were active in the metro NYC area with museums and foundations and such. I no longer have the information, but I'm going to see if I can find it again. It was an interesting bit of a story!

Ah, here is additional information, fairly recent (2008): fashion weddings

His partner is an interior designer (well, I was close--not bad for someone who was reaching back at least 6 or 7years in memory! At my age, I'm lucky I still remember anything....)

Page 2 starts the reference to Kobrin & Mincus.

I just checked and the first link isn't working--not sure why, as I not 5 minutes ago viewed the article online. I try finding/fixing it later....

But what is the link between the Maisonette info already in the VFG label directory (which Lizzie says went under in 1960 or so), and the "FOR MAISONETTE" on the Kobrin label? Same company or no? The dress I have here, a fabulous metallic knit cocktail dress that looks early 70s, although its dolman sleeves give it an older vibe, is "Jay Kobrin FOR MAISONETTE" from "Neiman-Marcus." Clearly an expensive item.
