any vintage purse people out there?

hey :)

are there any vintage purse people here? i bought 3 vintage/antique purses yesterday at an estate sale, and would like to sell them on ebay, but am unsure whether they would sell better in a lot or as individuals.

1. victorian / edwardian (not sure which)
mint or near mint

emerald/pine green, tight knit in a pattern. pattern decorated with tiny beads like marcasite, only these display many colors, instead of just silver. has tassel on bottom, general shape is drawstring at the top with the closure at the top.

2. edwardian / 1920s micro-beaded
general good condition, which is marred by a shattering of the silk lining in three places: just under the frame, to the right (about 1/2 inch square, if i recall), and where the silk naturally creases at either side of the hinge. beading still seems 95% intact, it's just that there is shattering of the silk there. seems to me that the lining could be reinforced. color is primarily silver, with other colors (but not all over, like a dresden)

3. 1930s / 1940s blue and off-white pettipoint

very pretty. almost nothing wrong with it (although i will examine all three in further detail today). small mark on one side, but not terribly remarkable. strong and solid.

i'm hoping that the purse people can advise me on this, since i'm more of a clothing gal. also, if you're so inclined, please feel free to suggest general values. i have an initial idea, but would like other opinions as well.

(how have vintage / antique purse sales been doing lately on ebay?)

(pictures to come, thanks in advance). :)

cheers :)

Tamara, I am not a purse person, but am friends with a purse dealer who keeps being kind and giving me pointers while we stand at auctions together.

The beaded purse market is a bit swamped these days. There are a LOT of purses out there right now as shows, sales and on ebay.

The purses most in demand by the high end collector are the micro glass bead allover ones with figural motifs and fancy frames. And condition is everything!

I also moved a lot of purses from a sale - last year I think. I did best with the type purses you have in a lot.

The first one is very pretty, but not a high dollar type. The second - I see separation of the beading at the top and sides and that is a very difficlut repair. Geena tells me it is almost impossible.
The third is a very pretty purse and may sell on it's own to a nice price.

You might list it singly first, and then if it does't move well, put all three together.

hi, l'm a vintie bag dealer but more an avid collector..they are all victorian of varying periods, as she did reign for 60 years..
the first is mid victorian and saleable, thought not for very much as these purse/bags werent adorned and were for everyday use by the less well off!

the second is in poor condition and would need a professional repair, which l know to my cost is very expensive!! They do sell for scraps, or repairs, and l do buy them too, is one side better than the other?? the third one is late victorian possibly edwardian c1901-13....

hope this helps some...

The 1st is quite nice, the 2nd is pretty much to be sold to someone who would use the beads. I think if you worked on the 3rd one filled it up a lot with tissue or stockings to get it back into its proper shape you might get a fair price as it does appear to be petitpoint...is the label inside Made in France or Belgium. The coloring is very pretty, not usually seen in this sort of blue. I think you could get the marks out of it to with some dabs of salts of lemon (you buy it at the pharmacy, its like salt, mix with water and apply gently to the stain with a q-tip) or Mr. Cleans eraser which I find works on some items, have to be careful with any of these as they can just eat the fabric too.

there are some people who do buy damaged beaded bags for their frames or beads, etc, or more so there are people who start collecting and cannot afford the high end bags and buy an imperfect one and trade up later just to have something from that time period. I wouldn't buy a damaged purse on ebay but if one presented itself to me in person i might want to rescue it.

if not in a purse lot, i might sell the damaged one at a live show/physical shop or somewhere other than ebay where people can touch it. i usually am not into selling damaged items but i think it has historical merit enough for someone who wants a prop where a stitch or two rather than a restoration would make it costume, or its their first foray into older things and just wants something to look at the construction as a study piece. (or want to shadow box it)

The first one even though it may not be a high dollar purse perhaps, i see three leafed clovers - and might use the color combo/motif promoted as an irish theme around st patty's day when people pay too much for anything with a clover or shamrock on it unless those aren't clovers and i am going blind. Or it will sweeten the deal on the lot to have bags that are in good condition along with a damaged one rather than some lots I see where everything in the lot is beyond repair. not the highest level of purses of this era, but it will probably appeal to someone just fine

I have NO idea what to do with mine....look at this, flawless bag, not exciting but pretty.....

NO bids? No one wants it for 25 dang dollars????

Feh. I think I may take a few of these bags I have on consignment to the shop, I had kept them at home for their frailty, but maybe the sturdier ones would at least get 25-50 from someone here in town.

Just really amazed at the beaded bag market! Ang

Seriously, it's a tough market to crack. I have been watching it from the edges for years now and still don't quite get it.

I gave up on selling beaded bags quite a while ago. They are way too expensive to acquire in my area to try buy and learn from experience.

as a bag collector Ang....l'm not attracted to pouch bags as they dont display well, arent practical to use today , but at some time may be... l have my share of them in my collection, to meet the timeline if you like....but as l use my bags, l dont just have them wrapped in paper hidden from view for years at a time...l have them behind glass. hanging from hooks on display.....much to hub's chagrin!!

everyone is diffenrent, by vintie bags are for my use and to feed my passion/my fetish!!)(*&^)(> there are a lot of these bags around...and l would have it if not for the us postal costs! l'm saving my money for the yard sale....
