Anyone familiar with J. Peterman? Not TOO vintage, but...

Hi, all!
I'm actually venturing out into selling some stuff this week. My last listings were in January!! It's been a LONG TIME and I'm rusty!

Anyway... I picked these up because I'd recalled J. Peterman stuff doing VERY well.
That doesn't seem to be the case anymore... but I also can't find much like what I have here.
The patent number on two different items (I have 4 items total, 2 shown below) date to 1998. The stores went bankrupt in 1999. I know that Titanic came out in... late 1997? And I think they did some "Titanic" style stuff around that time, but I really don't know much about that era or style... what I DO know is that these two outfits have more of a VERY vintage/costume look to them compared to the other J. Peterman stuff I'm seeing online.
The other two pieces I have are much more plain cardigan sweaters.

Anyway -- what are these two outfits trying to be? Anyone?

J Peterman are still going, albeit only selling online. I quite like their things, although the retail tends to be pricey....nice to pick up good pieces on ebay.

The first one seems to have some Victorian/Edwardian influence with that fitted velvet and metallic lace trim...also looks a bit folksy, Russian perhaps?

The second one: wow, those sleeves are something else! Again, Victorian/Edwardian, even more so...

Some of the styles are heavily vintage looking and I've heard that they straight out copy originals. I have a 30s red silk velvet opera coat that was one of their "samples" to inspire a copy. It's gorgeous but I can't see how they can reproduce for the price somtimes - so much handfinishing, and as we know, no one does that anymore.

With Peterman, they could have been inspired by ANYTHING. Their shoppers used to hit the vintage shows looking for goodies to copy.

I vaguely remember the pink dress, but not the top set, which is vaguely 1860s.
I did love their 75% off everything in the warehouse sales - great fun

:Dhahaha, I always think of Seinfeld when I hear J Peterman... Elaine wrote copy for them..

Yeah... and you know what's REALLY weird? The actor who played J Peterman in Seinfeld was John O'Hurley. The J Peterman company went bankrupt in 1999 and was bought out by another company. Later, when THAT company was having difficulties, J Peterman was able to buy his name back. It was the actor John O'Hurley that helped him raise the funds -- and now John works for J Peterman company!
Heh -- thought that was funny
