I have this lovely evening dress (that I swear I spent forever ironing, although it hardly shows) and I cannot seem to find anything about the two labels. Has anyone heard of them? Your thoughts on a timeline would also be much appreciated - 90's??? It's a polyester chiffon with an attached taffeta underskirt.

Thanks!

Deborah

That is so pretty! I'm not familiar with the label, but I think your
guess of 90s is a good one.

Are you sure its polyester? Marty Modell was a high end Swiss designer/manufacturer who sold through high end shops. I have handled stuff my him before from the late 1950s and 1960s but I don't know how long they were in business.

Thanks everyone.

Jonathan - No wonder I couldn't find anything!!! I found a 60s Marty Modell dress while surfing and the lettering on the label is almost bang on, but it was black lettering on white with "made in Switzerland" underneath. Other than that, I can't seem to find anything on him - I will dig deeper and try a burn test. Needless to say, I would be thrilled if it was 60s! But I don't think so.

Harriet - it's metal, but coloured - I'll take a close up and post. And it's a bigger size - snug 28" waist, snug 34" under the breasts and, as always, I'm having difficulty determining the cup size, but I think at least a B, if not a C.

Thanks again!

Deborah

Here are some pics of zip and one of the funky flower:

Oh, I do like it! And that is a good size :)

I personally think it's a bit older, maybe 70s? Flowers look floaty 70s to me too - but I am still very cautious with my dating and often have to check though, so am quite ready to be corrected!

As Jonathan said earlier it looks like the maker is a very good one. I always like it when dresse have that internal waistband (the name of which I should have tattoed on my hand as I constantly forget it!)

I really, really like it whenever it was made, so do tell when/if you list it!

Thanks Harriet! If all goes well, I'll list this Sunday.

I feel hopeless with burn tests!!! Off to try again...

Helps if you take a bigger piece as opposed to a tiny thread! It was self extinguishing, hard bead; so synthetic.

Now are we 70's or 90's?

And the verdict is...

snug 34" under the breasts and, as always, I'm having difficulty determining the cup size, but I think at least a B, if not a C.

I would never ever try to determine "cup size" or at least don't mention it in an auction unless you are selling a bra or in rare cases with molded cups present, a bathing suit. It will eliminate a lot of bidders who it would truly and sincerely fit right off the bat depending on how they would like the garment to fit or what undergarments they choose to wear or not as the body is flexible in some areas . And it will eliminate you getting questions like "it says its for a C cup. I am a 36B will it fit me?? or I am small D will it fit??" And you have no way to even attempt as you have no clue how the woman is built otherwise or if she is even wearing the right size.

I would just put the measurements in there. Waist, and then measure the bust INSIDE the dress(but indicate such) as well.
Underbust is actually useful to determine if it will fit around the ribcage in certain dresses.

This is really, really pretty! And it looks very well made! I always feel that when you have both the shop label sewn into the piece and the maker's label, that's a good sign.... Can't help with the dating, though, as this has elements that seem "older," though the fabric is synthetic. The seam tape and construction "looks" older, but maybe because this is a high-end dress! And the label styles look older to me as well, but, again, they just may be very traditional for this maker and that boutique.

In any event, it's lovely! I adore that stylized flower!

Thanks a heap Chris. I have been taking all my measurements from the outside - I followed what many sites do. Do I measure straight across on the inside for the bust size?

Thanks!

Always go on the outside in most cases. The only reason I do some strapless on the inside (and tell them its the inside) is there are usually a lot of frou frou on the outside that makes it hard to get an accurate measurement. (or just the way it lays.). One dress i had actually had a tighter lining and what you thought of as the actual dress part you saw could be measured as bigger - it was designed so it hung a certain way and the person wouldn't wear it skin tight and ruin the effect. And sometimes they are just hard to lay right to measure flat with ruching, etc. I open the back and take the tape measure from the edge of the zipper around to the other end. And then i can get the bust right if its a 3 dimensional or molded effect too

Thanks Anne - I missed your note yesterday.

Thanks for clearing that up Chris, but I'm still a little confused - "And then i can get the bust right if its a 3 dimensional or molded effect too" - so when it's done from the inside the molds are out of the way and therefore it's more accurate?

I'd love another opinion on 70's or 90's!!!

Thanks

Deborah
