I just bought a dress and am wondering what the fabric is, it was listed as 40s.. and has a sort of embossed pattern.. The fabric is a nice thickness and strong.. any ideas? Thanks.

It looks a bit like crepe with a jaquard pattern if that were possible, the photos aren't quite clear enough - could you retake them in daylight? next to a window would be best.

Thanks very much. Some new pics taken by the window..

Thanks Claire! You've just jogged a brain cell, as I recall once owning a CCTV dress which was sold to me as matelase (or something similar sounding) and it felt very much like this one, but a different pattern. Thanks!

Also, Hooplah, if you're not familiar with it, be sure to check out our incredible Fabric Resource, there are many ways to help you find what you're looking for:

such as this page: Fabric Looks Like

Your dress looks lovely, congratulations!

For both cloque and matelase the pattern is woven in -- not heat stamped.
Cloque has two yarns--one vertical (the warp) and the other horizontal (the weft or filling).
Matelase will have more than two yarns--but they're all woven together and the fabric is thicker with some "volume".
Look at the wrong side of your fabric. In the sections where it is raised on the right side, is there an indentation on the WS or is it more or less smooth? If the former, it is probably cloque.
