I have a Coppini Silversmiths Compact and Lipstick. As I have gone through the completed listings on ebay I find that many of this style go for $400-$500 (I haven't seen any of this brand recently).

Anyone know enough to know if I should put a reserve, or what an appropriate BIN would be. They both have the 800 mark, but appear to be gold washed.

Also, there are lots of terms used, and i am not sure I understand them-- is this vermeil?

I have a small collection of compacts but don't know a whole lot about them.
I just pick up ones I like when I find them in my small budget.
So I'm no help with your questions but wanted to say

THIS set is beautiful!!!

I agree, that's BEAUTIFUL! Unfortunately I don't know anything at all about compacts. But please let us know when you do list it - I would love to add it to my watch list.

Hi,
Faboulous compact set ! Your compact IS silver - the 800 mark confirms this as a lower grade than is used for the UK or sterling standard of 925.
These compacts were made in Italy at the turn of the 20th century as tourist items for folk doing the "grand tour" believe it or not!
The enamel looks to be in super condition and it could be lapiz lazuli at the edges, many compacts of this type have malachite or other hard stones at the edges.
As you have a matching pair with the cloth sleeves with the Coppini name and the subject matter is good I would put a buy it now on for no less than $500.00
You may want to try www.specialistauctions.com where there isn't a listing fee and only a 3% FVF . before placing it on ebay - I know there are collectors that come to the site looking fro items just like yours and they get snapped up quite quickly - There is also a forum for vanity items where you could advertise it being listed, and I can let possible buyers know it is there for you.
There are plenty of compacts to look at there too!
Good Luck

Yes, if it's gold colored (or "washed") and marked sterling, it's vermeil.

I'm no help on price, but I wouldn't risk this for a minute--would go either with a fixed price (on a site or BIN if you're listing on eBay), or a hefty reserve.

It's GORGEOUS!

(Editing my post here: I just checked the definition, and took another look at the pics--especially the back of the compact, which is mostly silvery--and the coating on this isn't thick enough to be considered vermeil... Sorry; that's what happens when I talk before I think!)

Hi I think it is gold wash - as it's both inside and out - it is prone to wear which is what appears to have happened a bit on the back of the compact.
Persoonally I wouldn't get too bogged down with terminolgy. List it at no less than $500.00, it is stunning and there are collectors looking for just this type of exquisite piece.
