Anyone want to hazard a guess on this old jacket?

I'm not quite sure what to make of this one... so please chime in with
suggestions!

It feels REALLY old. It's black velvet, with embroidered colored velvet
shapes and gold braided soutache. Small, old looking snaps up the front. The
lining resembles a faded red linen-like material. The jacket is in excellent
condition, with the exception the collar which has spots of considerable wear to
the nap of the velvet and a few small tears which reveal the interior lining.
The cuffs also have a small split with a tiny snap to close.

Please... I'd love some help with this one. It has me perplexed!

not much help - aside from to say i have a purple velvet one with the same construction, and lots of silvery embroidery. i'd take a pic to compare but it was on loan for the chistmas navity as a three kings costume (i'd given up dating it, and it was child sized) and i keep forgetting to bring it home
:BAGUSE:

i'd actually wondered if mine was some kind of ethnic costume?

My mom had a jacket that was very very similar many moons ago. (60s-early 70s.) She may have had it for years before that. (She kept everything forever!!) She'd wear it for 'big' bridge club events. ...she thought the design was like a deck of cards...hearts, diamonds, clubs & spades!! If you're selling it maybe you could use that angle since poker is huge right now?!? (vintage card poker jacket?!?)

Hi Kristine...
I posted on the vca too...Ill copy here.
I know a guy that sells alot of Odd Fellows regalia. This jacket reminds me of some of those tunics in construction as well as fabric and decoration. There is one listed here 7740969655.
If it is an Odd Fellows piece or other fraternal org then it is probably 1920ish.
I am not saying it is. Just that that is what it reminds me of. Especially the lining. Not sure about the floral motif.

Hi all-- thanks for chiming in ;-)

Marie.. I checked out that auction you listed & can see the similarities in design, although the construction is quite different of course.
One of my thoughts on this is that maybe it was reconstructed from something else... see how the back doesn't quite line up? But then I can't figure out that center design, as it looks like original stitching up the back... so the flaw might have just bee from the original seamstress.

I must say that FEELING this I'd guess it was at LEASt from the 20's/30's. Maybe even older. The lining is a really odd thing, too. Almost linen like and looks almost like burlap!

hi, l cant think of any style that was worn like that pre 1930's....unless its a man's jacket..or a 'costume' for the stage perhaps....l think it could be a costume piece, no lables then..

the styling is late 30-40s, wor with pallazzo pants in that boxy style...or post war, worn with a pencil or FULL skirt..into 50s, early 60s even....

Well... based on my intuition about the piece (having handled it) and several more thoughts on VCA, I've decided to go with 20's... The decoration really does have a very Art Nouvea feel to it.
I did mention that it could be from a costume, as well. I suppose it could also be from a fraternal order... but seeing as how this is a woman's jacket, it seems unlikely as most orders were men's, right?

I was thinking maybe less fraternal order and more theatrical or film. And I agree about art nouveau (haven't read the VCA though). But I guess there could be 20 very plausible and correct ideas of where it came from.

Heh.. exactly. So I went with what felt right to me. It really is a mystery, though!

I'm not much use on anything earlier than 50's, but my very first impression of this was 40's. It's one of those things that could be almost any period if it's ethnic or a costume..... I really like the design on it!

Thanks, Anne. ;)

I guess it'll stay a mystery, for now. I've had so many different guesses! I did put this in the listing:
From the best guesses of some very knowledgeable people, this most likely dates from the Edwardian 'teens or the 1920's... and it does have that "feel" to it... but admittedly could be from as late as the 30's or 40's.

I think this is just one of those items that one buys because they love it, not because of when it was made.

Of course... it could be that NO ONE loves it, as it doesn't have any bids yet & ends tonight. Not that that means anything on ebay these days... it does have it's watchers.

Well, I think your auction looks terrific, and if someone loves this, they wouldn't care a whit when it was made, IMHO! (Just a couple inches too small for me, or you might have a bid on it by now!)

Thanks, Anne :D

I fell in love with it on sight and am super surprised it hasn't sky rocketed by now! I'd meant to extend the auction if there were no bids... but I passed the 12 hour deadline already :(
