I wrote Aquascutum regarding the coat that had the 1930-36 Duke's warrant on the label with pictures attached. If you're in London and have one of their garments that needs dating they are willing to help. Here's their reply:

Thank you for your enquiry regarding your vintage Aquascutum Coat.

Unfortunately with the information you have provided we are unable to offer an accurate history of this particular garment.

It is difficult for us to identify the coat without close inspection, but should you wish to bring the garment to the archives in Regent Street, we would pleased to assess the coat and offer a 'potted history' where possible.

We are delighted that you continue to gain great pleasure from one of our fine garments.

Yours sincerely,

I know Chanel won't help you anymore. You used to be able to take things to their stores, but they won't do that anymore. I found Cartier was VERY helpful, as was Coach. Vuitton will give you the date of manufacture if you have the serial number.

No photos weren't enough, Harriet. Perhaps I'll wait until I go to England again before I sell the coat - plans to go to Folksten Kent, White Cliffs of Dover and see where my grandmother was born and married have been on my to do list for some time now.

That's good to know, Jonathan. Maybe the list will grow.

...Burberry are the same...however, l may be able to help a little. l was once a buyer and my main accounts were with Burberry and Aquascutum...l know a little of their early revolving styles, aint nought new under the sun, so they say. though i will probabbly be stumped..

l spend my winters in an bright red aquasctum vintage and my springs in a classic Burberry trench, though right now, its staying in the cupboard it is sooo common, or should l say popular here!

Thanks, Sara. There was a thread with pictures, but I can't seem to find it. I'll look again later and, if no can find, will post more pics.

You gals are the greatest!!! Thanks for the bump, Harriet. And what a great offer, L! Aquascutum seems to want the actual garment though. I will try and take some better pictures and post some later today. If nothing else, it may help Sara.

Okay, a little late on posting pics, but better late than never, I say! Actually, I was a little despressed after a small, albeit sick, dog attacked the hem of the coat and I just didn't want to deal with it. (Perhaps, the dog knew the owner of the coat in another life...) BUT, all is not lost because I found another label in one of the pockets and I'm hoping, if nothing else, it may help solve the dating mystery. I could of sworn I checked those pockets...

Below is the URL with a gazillion pics of the coat and below is the new found label - size 34, no less!

Apologies for taking so long and many thanks!

Deborah
