Are there any Peggy Hunt Experts here?

I picked this up because I have a weakness for lace dresses and this one was QUALITY all the way. When I got it home I found a tiny little tag on the zipper facing. It isn't a LABEL in the true sense of the word and it doesn't look like a laundry tag either. It is stitched in place and I just don't know what it means.

The dress looks like a Peggy Hunt design and the quality is what you would expect to see................but....I just don't know how to list it.

Hi there!

I must admit your dress is indeed a mystery. I've had a few Peggy Hunt cocktail dresses and all have had a similar label to each other with a specific type of font. Your label does not look like a Peggy Hunt label, as I have seen them that is. You can see her label HERE in our label resource.

As far as your label, I don't know what to tell you. Seems that this could have been sewn in after the fact to take advantage of the name. After all, her dresses were high end and worn by some of Hollywood's elite.

Maybe someone else will chime in. Good luck.

My first thought was that it was a Laundry Tag...........LOL but it's not and it's original to the dress. It is a fabric tag and is sewn on between the lace and the lining......so it wasn't added after the dress was made.

I just don't know what to do with it......or how to promote it.

Of course it's possible that the larger Label was removed or perhaps never attached for some reason.

I just hate to say it is if it isn't. But I hate to pass up the possibility that it is a true Peggy Hunt.

SIGH! I feel like this little fella...chasing my tail

:dogs:

It's definitely a mystery. I'm hoping that by keeping this thread going that some of our other trade members will chime in. I'm extrememly confused by the tag. Further puzzled by the fact that if someone was going to try to pass it off as a Peggy Hunt dress, why they didn't sew in an actual Paggy Hunt tag. I'm rethinking my initial response due to this, but still have no solid answer ofr you.

Is the tag nicely sewn into the dress? It looks as if it may be a little lopsided like it doesn't exactly parallel the zipper. Also, is the thread of the exact color as the rest of the stitching? Is the thread the same color as the imported lace label? Just because it is sewn into the lining but not the lace, doesn't exactly mean that it is original to the dress. There were a great many home seamstresses that could have pulled that off easily. What I'm wondering, and this is ONLY A GUESS so do not take it to the bank, is that maybe it was constructed as a sample dress??

Let's see if anyone else may have any other ideas.

Did Peggy Hunt do patterns? If so, would the patterns include a label maybe? Could it possibly be a custom made dress by a talented dressmaker?

nice! My thought was that it was a sample as well. Sorry you didn't get answers until today.. I think most of us were offline over the weekend..

Sample (or possibly mfgs reject) is what I thought of also.....where it would be labeled prior to the final inspection and final label placement.......

Vogue is the only pattern company I know of that issued labels and they seldom had the designers name. Those usually say "Vogue Paris Original" or whatever the collection was and they were embroidered and large and top quality.

This label is on inexpensive canvas and is printed (not embroidered). It is 1 inch long and 1/4 inch deep and you can barely see where there is a black line under the name.......like it was cut from a ribbon of names. Not just one label printed but a strip of them.

Here's a close up of the label. The stitching and thread match the stitching on the zipper facing and the zipper itself.

This is an image of the back side of the label and you can see that the lining is not sewn through, which if it were place after construction they would just sew through both layers......I can't imagine anyone going to that much trouble just to brand something that isn't what it appears to be. KWIM?

Maybe this is a Lizzie question, but I do think Peggy Hunt's granddaughter was either on the public forum at one point or at least Lizzie got some info for the label resources for her. I don't have any contact info, nor can remember any other details. The memory is a bit foggy at the moment. Knowing how information gets sorted in that cavern, it really was probably 4-6 years back.

I remember when her grandaughter was posting on the VCA boards on ebay, that was awhile back. The dress certainly looks like a Peggy Hunt, it reminds me of one I have here somewhere.

No, I sent it through the aol email addy, but I might try the yahoo one also. I suspect from her blog posts that she is just not active right now. So I think I'm own my own in that regards.

Which is about when her last blog post was.

So this may remind a mystery..........a beautiful mystery but a mystery nevertheless
