Are you wearing vintage for the holidays?

Two nights ago I went to my husband's office holiday party and I wore a vintage dress from the mid 50s. It was interesting getting in and out of a car with a buckram lining underneath. Not nearly as tough as a giant crinoline, but it still posed its navigation issues. I will show a picture of the front of the dress later when my husband gets pictures from his friend. The photo we had of me with my husband from the front didn't turn out (we ran out of battery juice)

Is anyone else planning to wear vintage this holiday...to something either formal or casual??

Chris

certainly am - my christmas pressie is a vintage dress which i plan to wear on christmas day ( i always get ridiculously overdressed to go visiting). will take pics!

that dress looks very lovely - can't wait to see the front. what shoes are you wearing? that's where i usually fall down (pardon the pun) when i plan vintage outfits... super wide feet in vintage terms mean i am quite limited.

Chris, that dress is stunning; can't wait to see the front!

Well, I have the dress, but no place to go.... I just bought a 1950's brocade dress in a beautiful bright blue color, fits great, and am now waiting for an invitation somewhere! One of our neighbors mentioned having a New Year's Eve party, so hoping that happens! Or hoping my nephew finally proposes to his long-time gal, so maybe there'll be a wedding coming up soon!

Oh my... I haven't given a thought to what I will be wearing for Christmas. I've got a couple of vintage red sweaters so maybe will go that route. We are usually pretty casual here and don't go out and about much.

Can't wait to see the front of your dress Chris... it looks lovely from the back. Did you have a good time at the party?

I just bought a pair of platforms to go with 1940's dress Iam going to wear to husands office party. I got the shoes at Anhtropologie. Online they coat 288 but at the store they were on sale for 24 bucks.. Now I have to learn to walk in them.

Turn around, Chris, we want to see the front!

I might wear something vintage but it won't be a dress. We are casual here, too. Maybe I can find a sweater or shirt in my stash.

I have sold to several people lately who wanted a nice vintage dress to wear to Christmas or Thanksgiving dinner.

The party was a good time. It was at a country club and they really plaid their cards right by starting the cocktail hour at 6:30 and having the party over at 10/10:30. The meal was sit down and there were about 150 people there. It was midweek so people had to get up the next morning, but then everyone had a good time without going into the real late hours when everyone would be drunk LOL. The owners had a limo for the night in case someone needed to be driven home, and they also used it to drive folks around to look at christmas lights.

I will take a photo of the dress on the manni later on if i have a minute because who knows when i will get other photos.

Harriet. I wore a later pair of shoes that were very strappy. I call them "barely there" shoes. I wanted to find pumps that matched the dress but the color was impossible to match.

THe dress i used was a clutch that i just bought from Kristine awhile back. You can't tell from the pictures because the photo of the clutch is very dark,, (SEE BELOW) but that lighter creamy yellow color and the blue are an exact match or at least close enough to what is in the clutch and then it has metallic running through it. It was sort of an unorthodox choice because you would expect a beaded bag with this, but if you saw them together in real life you would be surprised how well they worked. It was perfect because i could take my husband's keys that he doesn't like to carry, etc, too.

Oh, and I want to see pictures of these christmas outfits!

I'm wearing vintage for Christmas. We're not going anywhere out just to Gary's parents but I always get dressed up for xmas anyways and found a dress which was SUPPOSED to be for stock, that is until I tried it on.

It's from the 60's and doesn't look like much on the hanger but it has curves that kill and fits my height and shape perfectly. A real hourglass dress. It's made from faille which is either silk or rayon or both which means I can't wash it. I've been letting it air out for weeks but it still smells of cigarettes so I'll be wearing lots of perfume on Christmas :D

This is my 60's new years dress:

Again, doesn't look like much on the hanger but this one has curves that kill too. It's very LONG and it fits me at 5'9" perfectly too. Gary says I look like Audrey Hepburn in it:wub:
We aren't going out anywhere so I'll probably just sit around eating Ferrero Rocher and stand out in the garden in it watching the fireworks go off in the neighbourhood!

WOO HOO, Lei. Be sure to take some pictures and show us!!

It's ironic too as I had looked in almost every modern clothes shop for something decent to wear but the prices were always outrageously expensive for what it was (I LOATHE paying alot for modern mass produced clothes but antique or vintage is another story!!) and the fit is never right with modern stuff. It's always made too boxy for me or triangle shaped (too small in the bust and too big in the waist).
With these two vintage dresses, it's like they were mine in a previous life :)

You know... I'm thinking of wearing my new black sweater knit top & skirt I got from Hollis (pastperfect2)

I was going to send you the link to the auction... but she already took the pics down :(

I want to see pics of everyone in their vintage :)

My husband surprised me with a vintage cashmere coat. Don't know how he managed it, but he did!

Hope everyone had a good Christmas! :)

I wore the dress in the first photo to my in laws and I must say I looked nice in it (no photos though). Unfortunately, the thread being 40 years old, couldn't last the day. The seam ripped right up the back and then under each arm!!! The dress was a good fit but I have a feeling that nicotine over 40 years must have weakened the thread as the dress came from a lady who smoked like a chimney. The fabric is ok but I'm going to have to resew all the seams, even the non split ones, with new black thread!!

Lei

oh lei! ah well, i bet you looked great and i suppose now you have a sewing project for the new year (although i'm guessing if you're anything like me you already have many!)...

i failed to take a pic too from christmas day, but in the end i wore a 1950's woollen jerry gilden dress which has a black wrap bodice and full red and black printed skirt...and is warm!
and then on boxing day i wore my christmas present from my mum - a very familiar looking dress from connie/cosmic cat that i'd completely forgotten about showing to her  - again no pics but will get on my glad rags again for new years eve and will make sure i get the camera out then!

hope everyone had fun vintage dresses or not!! :)

I wish I could find something vintage to wear on the holidays.
I am so short that most things I have found are too long for me and/or just don't fit right. :flaming:

And I don't like to alter vintage just to suit me.

But let me tell you that I will be on the prowl next year for that holiday outfit. And I am sorry your dress Lei. And Chris, you dress looks great from the back, so I bet the front looked just as good. :duh:

Jamie, I have the same problem. (but most gals fret that things are too short, not too long) I find that if steer away from tail end of the 60s through 70s clothing that is geared towards the maxi length and look for things from the 50s or the late 40s it works. I am only 5' and that dressed was exactly the right proportions. (80s items that are inspired by 50s items don't work because of the proportions) Esp, check out the half sized measurement dresses. They were geared towards petite and juniors unlike the half sizes today that are for folks that are stockier. Look for things with short shoulder to waist measurements (14-15.5") and bust size measurements that are odds if it is a fitted dress depending on what you normally take. (33,35,37,39 etc).

yes, I like things from the 50's.
My grandmother seemed to have skipped that era when shopping though. But then again, I haven't been through all her stuff either. Just my luck she will have them all bunched into a corner that I haven't been able to get to yet.
