Arrow mark in 40's shoes & clothing - war department?

I have this arrow mark that looks like a bird's footprint in some 40's period pieces and I've seen it online, together with the letters WD which was suggested to mean War Department. Does anybody know what the arrow stands for? I will upload a picture when I remember which item it was in!

(yes, that was in the first post)
Sorry, no I meant do you know the reason why some uniform items were marked war department and others weren't marked WD but only with the arrow?

In Canada the 'broad arrow' mark means wartime issue, without the broad arrow mark it is peacetime issue. I don't know why some would have WD and others not.

hmm, I'll have to find an example of this 'broad' arrow mark, all the ones I've seen were quite skinny, including the pair of shoes also marked WD. It's interesting to find out the code for all these symbols though! Thank you.

That is just what its called in Canada - the meaning was the same in the UK but the symbol might have been different, although its sounds similar - it looks like a bird's foot.

Or the items could actually be Canadian, I know members of this estate's family did live abroad for a period and bring back clothes & accessories, I have two American dresses from the aunt so far.

I seem to recall there is a C with a number on Canadian military items -- or is that just post war... hmmmm, not sure (its been a while since I studied up on military issue clothin). If you post pics I could probably tell - Canadian uniforms are slightly different and if its women's army there is a definite difference.
