Elsewhere Vintage
Olive St. off of Chapman Ave.
For shoppers overwhelmed by thrift stores that are piled high with worn-out clothes, Elsewhere Vintage provides a refreshing new look at old fashion.
Elsewhere, located off of Chapman Avenue on Olive Street, opened during the Street Fair on Labor Day weekend. The store sells wearable vintage clothing that range from collector pieces to trendy items that are fairly priced. Although Elsewhere isn't the cheapest store on the list, the clothes are the highest quality.
"We're picky about condition. This is stuff you won't find at most thrift stores," said Kristine Houston, the owner of Elsewhere.
The shop is organized and has a small, intimate feel.
"It's really clean; it looks like a regular store. I've been to vintage stores that are just disasters and it's just old clothes and you have to dig. But [Elsewhere] was so neat and they had such a good selection," said sophomore Danielle Williams.
While some collectors' items can be pricey, most items are under $100, said Houston.
"Most of the dresses I looked at were between $20 and $40 which, compared to dresses these days, is really cheap. And they're unique. Nobody else is going to have them," said Williams.
Houston plans to have a $24 rack sometime in November to centralize the lower-priced items, she said.
The clothes at Elsewhere are not outrageous costume clothes. Instead, Houston chooses pieces that are wearable in everyday life, she said.
The most interesting part of Elsewhere is its large selection of unique purses. Houston has collected purses most of her adult life, she said.
"Purses fit everybody, they're so individual," said Houston.
Shopping at Elsewhere can also help shoppers be environmentally conscious as well.
"It's recycling in its purest form and still stylish," said Houston. "These clothes are 60 to 100 years old and hold up better than clothes made last year and sold at H&M."
