Authentic Chanel Dress?

Hello everyone,

I bought this dress as a 1982 Chanel, but have been a bit unsure. After I got home, I started to doubt the veracity of the label and, therefore, the dress itself. Also, its composition made me wonder... The dress is 56% acetate and 44% viscose (I didn't think Chanel would make a dress with this sort of fabric); lining: 100% pure silk.

I went into a Chanel store here in London, but they said they cannot help. As I'm going to sell this dress, I wanted to make sure it is real. I will be very grateful for any and all input.

Kind regards,

Rafael Simonetti

Hi Rafael, as per the forum rules we cannot help with authenticity. I would suggest you start by addressing your queries with the person you bought it from. You could also see if an auction house will authenticate or give you details of where this can be done.

Thank you, Melanie. I wasn't really expecting an authentication, but an opinion before I went back to the person who sold it to me. I'll bear that in mind for the future! Thank you once again for your message.

Unfortunately Rafael they amount to much the same thing, an authentication is a person's opinion based on the evidence given. Authentication is not required if there is original proof.

I can't authenticate your dress, but I can make suggestions. that might be helpful.
Compare your label to those in the VFG resourse list. This is a Lagerfeld label --post 83.
The camellia buttons were used by Lagerfeld in the early 80s. They may be marked Chanel on the back The rtw buttons are gold colored; the couture are brass.

I can't authenticate it either, but I can suggest that this dress does not display the attention to detail I would expect of the house of Chanel. Note how the stitching is not always evening spaced, the buttons a little uneven and the bodice buckling a little above the drop waist indicating poor fit and construction. Even on the label, the stitching is crooked. Some of these might be the result of the photography, but not all.

I, too, find it odd that a dress with a silk lining does not have a silk outer - in my experience this is usually the case, especially with quality labels but I'm not familiar with all of the styles produced by Chanel, but I would have serious doubts about the authenticity of this dress.
