Hope everyone's having a good weekend!

I have 3 bags that I need help with in one way or another if I may?

First bag is probably from what I can tell is leather mock ostrich but hey could be man made? It's very thick, squeaky and quite hard?? There's a nylon zip so dates late 60s on, but what do you think the date is? Also, could it be real ostrich? I'm thinking not, as probably would have a proud label annoucing that fact & hey my nose may not be right, I think it smells leathery..hmmm

2nd bag is a bit confusing to me really. The maker is RFC Made In England but the store sells fine leather. The outer fabric feels like cloth so I thought lame or lurex (how do you tell the diff between lame cloth or lurex cloth?) but as they sell leather could it be leather?

3rd bag. Looks modern but only cos it doesn't look used at all and man made fabric so I thought yes, modern, but definite 50s style and there's a metal zip and what I would call a 'vintage smell', so could this be original or reproduction? There's no label, but find it difficult thinking a non label bag wld go 2 the trouble of puting a metal zip in????

Thanks Sandra, you are up late!! It's morning here....

The 1st one I didn't know the date so thanks for that one, 2nd bag I knew was 60s but wasn't sure if the last one was just a reproduction as looks brand new. I guess it's just never been used.

The 80s one, is there a helpful hint on how to tell real leather from ostrich? The 2nd one I wondered what the difference is between lame cloth and lurex cloth?

Thanks so much

Sarah

I agree with Sandra's dates - looking at the first one brings back memories, I remember them well. I can't give you instructions on how to tell real ostrich from fake except to say that yours is not the real deal, just a lovely and pretty bag.

Thanks Nicole for feedback.

Yes, it is a sweet lovely bag & as it's 80s I can call it vintage!

Is your book out yet?

Sarah

Sarah, a couple of ways to tell real ostrich from faux is that real will have little pinpricks in the "bumps" from where the quills were pulled out, and there will be quite a bit of variation in the "pattern" of the bumps. Some areas may have small ones or areas with none, others will have bigger and more. It depends on where on the ostrich the skin came from. And the wrinkles won't be consistent, either. It can be hard to tell a high-end faux from real. I have one now that I'm still diddling about whether it's real or not! I agree w/Nicole that yours doesn't look like real ostrich, but it does look like ostrich-embossed leather.

I also agree with Sandra's dating. But, for future info, you may find 50's bags in vinyl. I have had a few--they are later 50s, but it's not impossible to get a vinyl bag from earlier than the 60s.
