Banner Ladies

This was new to me (via the retronaut site)-

and from THIS SITE originally.

" These women were hired by retailers to cover themselves with the items sold by their employers. They were then photographed for advertising purposes. Many would march in "merchants parades," carrying their banners, and sporting their wares.

Advertising light bulbs - and a blacksmith. The bed springs woman has them in her hair!

Amanda,

Those are really wonderful to see. I do have 2 of these, original photographs of young women covered in hats and millinery flowers holding signs with the name of the milliner or shop. However, I did not know this was an advertising method utilized by merchants other than in the fashion and millinery trades. Certainly not hardware! I had no idea it was so prevalent.

Next time I come across one of my photos, I will post it here to share also.

Looks like attractive women were used as billboards just like they are today...some things never change!

Thanks for posting this. My Retronaut feed has not sent me this, or anything in a while...hmmmm.

Hilarious. I will be on a mission now to see if I can find some. I started at 9 collecting postcards. What a hoot.

Never seen these before, how fantastic! I'd never have guessed these were advertisements. Thanks for sharing Amanda!
