I think I have an ideal little ensemble here & would love opinions! But, first the Ben Barrack NY dress: Is this late 40s, would you say? Looks like it to me, but I don't know for sure. I once had a Dior 40s suit with many of the same styling details, so that's how I'm dating it.... Sleeves are 2-gored underneath, and are not set-in sleeves; are part of the bodice. And, please, what are those little bustle-like pleat thingies over the hips called? Dress is jet black, with no worn areas, but I lightened it a lot to show detail, so the color looks uneven with my lighting. It's in wonderful condition and I only wish it fit me! Oh, and this fabric is lovely--it's heavy, and I think silk, but not your typical de chine type. Has the luster of silk, but you can see the weave--I think this is what may have been called "Jap" silk? And the taffeta lining appears to be silk. It's luscious!

Now, to go with this little beauty, I found a gold-trimmed velvet clutch (matches velvet neckline trim), a 1940s Fray-Pruf black slip in a size small enough to go with the dress, and a pair of black slingback pumps (not real old, but in a velvety "doeskin" finish and with gold trim to match the clutch. Shoes are also in a size that someone who fits this dress might wear. I'm going to list them all separately, but cross-sell in my listings? What do you think?

Thanks!

Well, I think you are very smart and may be onto something. Be sure to find a black dress scan if you can. They are everywhere this Fall in the fashion mags and online. (also velvet!)

By all means, add that label to the lingerie label thread.

I think your dress is mid to late 50s with the sleeve cut, shoulder shape and skirt length and shape.

Cross selling can be a great way to get more people to your items.

I would definitely cross market everything. SHOW the shoes and the purse with the dress and specifically say that they are available seperately, check your other listings.

Never ever assume this. :) I am 5' and am an 8M and grandma is 5' 3" with size 10.5W!. there are petite gals with huge feet and tall ladies with size 6's and 7's. When selling as a complete ensemble aside from an accessory suite, shoes too small or too large can be a deal breaker for someone who is not thinking resourcefully with a sister in mind for the shoes or would think about consigning them. Not all buyers would want to go through that. You would think someone would see the value in the pieces and say "2 out of 3" ain't bad, but that isn't how all people think. So i would say the "seperate, but crossmarket" might work more to your advantage.

If pairing anything, I might suggest putting the purse with the dress or purse with the shoes.

I'm still stumped on age with this dress! If it's not late 40s, I don't think late 50s either. I've had lots of late 50s dresses over the last couple years, and never had the hip seams & gathering/bustle effect like that. Have had the bow & belt at the waist, but not that waistline & hipline styling. Also the fabric is "older" in feel & look--hard to explain but if you could see & touch it in person..... What say mid-50s?

Getting some great help here; thanks! I'd never pair any of these together, exactly for the reason that I can't assume someone who takes a size 4 or 6 dress would take a small shoe size, and also because I can't assume everyone's tastes would accommodate any 2 or 3 out of these items! But, I think that cross-selling is a good idea if anyone is looking for that special "outfit"--they don't have to go searching for all the separate pieces if they DO happen to like each individual item! I think I'll offer a discount if the same person buys more than 2 of these to go together....
