Beaded/Sequined Dress

I'd like to know more about this heavily beaded, sequined, and rhinestone dress. And I really mean heavy! I weighed it on my bathroom scale, it weighs 7 lbs!

It's floor-length, sleeveless, and very stretchy, so even though it's marked size 10, I can easily get my size 12 body into it.

The label says: Gene Shelly's Boutique Internationale, Made in Hong Kong, 100% Wool RN 27049. There's a little bag of extra beads and rhinestones pinned to it.

The inside is kind of itchy. I was a little surprised that such a fancy dress didn't have a lining.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Well hmmmm... my guess is late 60's, early 70's.. . but there's a thought in the back of my head that says i'm wrong.
When did they stop putting "British Hong Kong" on stuff?

Also -- if it's a closer to a MODERN size 10, that would indicate a date after, what? 1968?

To my knowledge, Hong Kong beaded items experienced their zenith in the 60's... so yeah. I'm still sticking with my late 60's date. :D

Love to hear other's thoughts on this!

I'm going with 60s too (like Kristine) although I'm thinking
earlier to mid 60s.

Very, very glamourous, VaVoom dress.

I googled the label name but other then a couple of
the same label being offered on other websites, I didn't come up with anything. I do have a book on vintage
California fashions and will check tomorrow to see if
this label is mentioned anywhere.

From my notes - " Labels stating British Crown Colony of Hong Kong were discontinued in the mid-80s after the 1984 Joint Resolution."

Dang - seven pounds is heavy and that does look itchy - and a LOT of work. It has kind of a tile - or mosaic thing going for it. Neat.

Oooooooooooh........I love that!!! I'm going early to middish as well, it strikes me as a little curve conscious for later. Metal zip? Just stunning!! Ang

I have a beaded cardigan from "Gene Shelly's boutique International" in my store. Like your dress, the beadwork and design are both phenomenal, and I have it dated to the 60s (which I agree yours is from, too).

Odd there's no lining (my sweater has a silk-lined body)--I would have suspected it had been removed somehow, but as the label is in place, I guess it was made that way...

om I just love the knitwear and beadwork that came out of the hong kong colony up to the late 60's..these were great standard, handbags too....of course this died off during the mid 70.s as they knitwear was less of the mode....

l have had many a beaded item come through from there on the site and have certain customers who bite my hand off for them as soon as they are about to be uploaded...(l do tell them about these items prior)....

l have a couple of women who'd love that, but they dont buy on ebay...

its a stunning example and should get you a good price l know it wold sell well on MY site...l'm green...

Gene Shelley frequently didn't put linings in their clothng. There are lots of buyers on eBay for these dresses and sweaters. In fact, there is a woman who often will ask for the code on the label because her mother, a chinese immigrant, did hand beading for this company and she collects her mother's work.Thought you'd like to know.-Lorinda
