I've posted this on the Schott message board to see if I can find out any info but thought I would ask here too. D pocket Beck Horsehide motorcycle flight jacket. Detachable Mouton collar, talon zips on front, pocket and sleeves. Side lacing. Not sure if it's 40's or 50's. Any experts here?

can't guess on the date, I've only found one horsehide and sold it at the flea market to a guy who deals in them. He was waiting in my space for me VERRRRRY early.

THAT is an amazing piece though. I love the style, you should do very well with that one whatever the date.

just watched the movie Test Pilot w/Spencer Tracey AND Clark Gable AND Myrna Loy last week...it was 1938 with fabulous flight jackets/clothes of course

don't recall ever seeing one w/the lace up sides, that is COOL.

although Marlon Brando wears his super cool jacket with belted waist in 1953's Wild One.

not helping, am i?

I have no idea about leather jackets, I admit - but it's really gorgeous and I am sure it'll do well. :cool2:

Oh yes, that is one movie that I am absolutely waiting to see (I always seem to miss it when it's on...). I adore Clark Gable!

I'll ask my husband, Simon. He's due back from work in a couple of hours and he's a bit of an 'anorak' (pardon the pun!) when it comes to jackets like this. He loves his flight jackets. I will let you know as soon as. :)

ok so far i see a site that says Beck made post war motorcycle jackets.... ima keep looking.. but there is mention of horesehides in the 30s-50s in same article. I don't know if they are still referring to beck though

ok getting somewhere.. the first beck with this excat label is 1928...... but this doesnt look like those. i think its an upgrade... maybe early 30s.. im trying to find the model number for it.. do you see one anywhere? they are VERY collectable from what I am finding out!

ok 1928 carried the perfector label and a "few" years later produces witht hte beck label, though I cat find a date.... if this is a 333 model you are looking at 800 plus for this jacket if it is in excelllent condition as there were only hundreds made and they are collectable... if there is a star on the shoulders anywhre then you are looking at the 40s/50ds model that marlon brando wore.. known as the 613 or 618.

Im trying to find a picture to compare!

Thanks, wow 30's hum? There are no model numbers in this. No stars on the shoulders, just the snap epaulets.

Susan, I'm not sure of how much the label changed throughout the years.

I'm wondering about this on EBAY, should I chance it or just list it in my store?

once youu find out which modle it is 333. 618 0r 613 Ebay with a reserve... its has more traffic and BLOG BLOG BLOG it people. are looking for this and pay up to 600-800 for a reproduction but it all depends on the condition of it. I would feature it and advertise it especially if it is the 333.

I cant find much info though. Allthe ones I have found were black an none still have the "add on" collar soooo I am not sure what to think of yours. No stars is possibly a good thing. the model 333 didnt have any, the 613 did and the 618 was an EXACT copy of the 613 but with NO stars... so I think we may be looking at a 618 or a 333.... but the 618 was the one marlon brando wore so still making it collectable, just not as much as the 333. BUT.....the odd thing is I cant find any mention of there being side lacing? so I am not sure what to think of your lacing up the sides. Maybe a custom piece. or knock off... I shudder to think knock off it doesn't look like a knock off... I hope that an expert shows up because if yours is real deal I cant find any that are brown with lace up sides... maybe you hit the jackpot here!

I hope so. fingers crossed for you!

Sorry I'm so late getting back but Simon (my husband), has some knowledge of vintage jackets. It does look like a vintage Beck Northeaster model 333 civilian biker's jacket. It has nothing to do with flight jackets. The zip on the D-pocket looks like a 1960's Crown zip, therefore possibly replacement. The main zip looks like a YKK zip, probably a 1970's replacement and it's been badly re-stitched. Normally there would only be one row of stitching either side of the main zip and there's at least two on this one which run into the collar - whoever replaced it didn't follow the original stitch holes. This affects the value. The smaller right pocket zip does look like a Talon - hard to see from the photo. The epaulette bar suggests late 40's or early 50's although it's an earlier design and the bar could be a later addition. The leather would benefit from treating with Pecards.

A word of caution - original Beck Northeasters from the 30's are quite rare and valuable, as a result of which many replicas have been made over the years. I'd be a bit cautious that this may be an old replica rather than an original. In mint condition, an original could fetch up to $1500 USD on eBay. New replica jacket today is about $700 USD.

You can certainly check out the forum here to find out more: www.vintageleatherjackets.org

Thanks Louise.

The front and small pocket zippers are Talon. Not sure on the D pocket one as the head isn't marked. Please tell Simon thank you for me! Off to check out the forum.

the D pocket zipper looks like the ones I have seen and they looked like the talons I found from the eara..... BUT.... the thing that concerns me more than the zippers are 1. the color 2. the side lacing and 3. there is an extra pocket the right pocket is not on the original 333 model... so. either this is custom, replica or not a 333?

Yeah, I'm having trouble getting info on the side lacing thing, I think it's cool though. 333 is my fav #, wouldn't that be a hoot if it turns out to be that!
