"Before They Pass Away" Project

Beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. So sad that modern civilization is creeping in, encroaching on their land and lifestyle, threatening their survival as a culture. If only we would learn from them instead of trying to impose our way upon them.

Agreed, Terri!
Tears were streaming down my face viewing these profoundly moving images.

The photographer states: "I didn't start this project anticipating that I could stop the world from changing. I purely wanted to create a visual document that reminds us and generations to come of how beautiful the human world once was."

The shock of recognition of how connected these people are to their environments contrasted with how disconnected we've become from ours.
Shattering, isn't it?

The simple honesty in those faces brought tears to my eyes. I loved looking at how each culture defined beauty, power, etc in the decorating of their bodies.

The shock of recognition of how connected these people are to their environments contrasted with how disconnected we've become from ours.

If by "environments" you are referring to nature as opposed to society then it's amazing to think that our "disconnect" is not that far in the past. My Mother, who is 90, tells stories of her family growing much of their own food. From the surrounding country side they gathered "greens" in the spring, berries when in season, etc. They canned and had a cold cellar for apples, potatoes, etc. to see them through the winter. They did not have a lot of material things.

It's nice to think that each day we can make choices to live a little more lightly on this earth. Actually that's one of the reasons I enjoy selling and wearing vintage clothing. (ok, off my soap box)

Beautiful! Papua New Guinea has lots and lots of different tribes, and what they wear for their feasts etc. is mindblowing, those headdresses and all that. It's also probably still one of the "wildest" places in this world in some ways.
I always find it amazing how ferocious the Maori look. Just about everything seems to be about looking ferocious. The first European discoverers must have been so terrified! And yet there's nothing nicer than transiting through Auckland airport, arriving early in the morning in a jetlagged daze and being greeted by a friendly Maori security officer. Made my day more than once! :)
Gayle - I thought that too! I have met some amazing Indigenous Australians through my work - not just the "touristy" side, but communities in out of the way places that were just so different from everything I'd experienced before. They face great challenges when it comes to living their own way in a modern world, and finding a balance between the two - even when living so far off.
