Bernell Clothing Co. Label

Remembering about my 40's suit made me go look at it (as you do) and completely forgot that with it I had a gents raincoat, also c.40's and a nice size. I've literally just taken it out so will look at it properly later..
The label is Bernell Clothing, Fifth Avenue (will add a picture later on). I was just trying to find some company history - it's a nicely made coat and thought it would be nice to research it a little before I sell it.

The only clue I have is an address in
an online copy of the 'Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade' third convention publication, January 1940. It reads (amongst other businesses whom I assume sponsored the convention in part)

"Greetings from Bernell Clothing Co. - Mens and Yound Mens clothing - Second Floor - 149 Fifth Avenue - Corner 21st Street - New York City"

Is that familiar to anyone? I just wondered when the company existed from/to. Thanks!

That's the only thing I found too.

I looked it up in whitepages.com and there is no current store called Bernell Clothing in the state of New York, so it might be safe to say that they are no longer around.

But maybe some of our New Yorkers have head of it.

Feel free to park it here as well for the eventuality that a bell might ring in somebody's head :)

An address is great though..maybe we can place all these mystery stores in their past geography :)

The next thing i think would be to look through the archives of the Times and other New York papers to see about references - ads contemporary to them or "remember when" type of articles.

That is if its something you want to pursue more in depth
