I wonder if anybody can help - whilst it's well known that the first Biba store opened on Abingdon Road, in what was a former chemist store, does anybody know what number the store was?? - I've looked through my books to no avail and would be very grateful if anybody could help.

Now that you mention it, I dont think I have ever seen the exact address stated anywhere. Maybe someone will come along who is familiar with the area.

I went on the hunt earlier today to see if I could find this information but the most info I found was that the first Biba store was located on the corner of Abingdon Road. It did not say which street or road it intersected with so you have more than a few places it could be.

If you could get your hands on a phone book from back in that time perhaps it might have them listed checking either 1964 or 1965. Google is only good so far back and then the information just is not there. I also tried another search named Clusty but nothing different turned up. Sorry I wasn't able to find anything. :)

Have you tried looking up photos? The shop will have likely changed in the last forty odd years but you never know....I was reading Barbara's autobiography recently and I seem to recall dark blue tiles on the front...?? I have no idea how long the street is but perhaps if you check the shops that are on corners??

I found the Biba website last night and I emailed them asking them what the actual numbered street address was for the original shop on Abingdon Road. We'll see if they are polite and at least answer my email.

It's No. 87

"Remaining (as it still remains) a social ‘mix’ the Abingdon-Scarsdale area was not unaffected by the liverlier ambitions in residential areas of inner west London perceptible in the 1960s: Biba set up at No. 87 Abingdon Road in 1964–6"
