Black Crepe \'40\'s Dress

I've shown this dress before. There are no tags. The zipper is on the right side but in this case there is no question which side is the front. Photos have been lightened to show detail. Since I took these pictures I added a snap to keep the front "closed."

I have occasionally flubbed up while sewing and put the closure on the wrong side - I wonder if this is what happened? My other theory is that this was sewn by/for a left-handed lady who knew what she liked. The traditional left-sided closure is easier for right-handed people, and the reverse would be true for south-paws.

I agree with Jen: occasionally you do find a dress with a right hand closure and as most dresses of this era were custom made, it's likely to have been made for a left handed wearer.

very interesting. i've yet to have come across a dress with a right-hand zipper or closure.

although once i had in a wartime novety print rayon dress with a long metal zipper on the back (and yes, it was original).

Cool! As a lefty in a righty world I've learned to use right handed can openers, scissors, and to put the coffee pot back on the warmer with the handle to the right (keeps the right-handeds in my house happy and they make me coffee ;) ).
How nice to alleviate one little hassle where you can~

Pretty dress, Nicole!

It's very possible that these dresses with right hand openings/closures were made for lefties - or maybe as Jen (Laughingmagpie) suggested someone sewed the left seam and said - oops - forgot the zipper!
