blazer vs. coat

I went to the opera last week. The man sitting next to me was wearing a chalk-stripe suit coat with cords. when I looked around at intermission, I saw several men with suit jackets and odd pants. Is this a new trend or just needed a more dressed up look?

What are the differences between a blazer and coat jacket--fabric, color, metal buttons? More?

Claire,

I have always thought the difference is in the buttons, which should be metal, not much to do with the fabric or color. (although I have not seen a true tweed blazer!) And a blazer is double breasted. This is off the top of my head with no coffee yet this morning. I always think of the classic navy blue blazer, double breasted with brass buttons. It could be wool, or it could be linen, etc.

I do not see this trend here in LA. Which opera did you attend? Was it here on the West Coast? Just wondering where you saw this happening with the men.

And a blazer is double breasted.
This may be a regional difference in terminology: I live in Scotland, and here, a blazer can be single or double breasted (single breasted being more common). It usually has metal buttons, and sometimes patch pockets. Some British schools have a school blazer as part of their uniform: this will often have the school's crest on the breast pocket.

I believe this is what is now considered 'smart/casual'. Mixing patterns/textures has been ok for a few years now.

IMO and this is just me.....I think a suit jacket with casual pants looks dumb. Period. Men have been mixing patterns and textures for over 100 years or more, that's nothing new and has been accepted as a fashion for a long time. Stripes and checks and plaid is fine. But a suit jacket with cord pants looks neither smart nor fashionable.

That is, of course, just my opinion. Call me stuffy....But a smart looking sports jacket is the choice if you are wearing casual pants, be they cords or jeans.

Of course on a woman, a suit jacket and jeans or leggings would look great!

I guess the "no rules" thing is taking over.

So few people dress up for the theatre or opera these days, it's really sad. Also Scottish and agree with what Sartorial Eloquence said, hated my school blazer!
