I don't know if you know about this book...
Vintage Hairstyling by Lauren Rennels
I saw it in the vintage shop in Denver on my holiday, but orderd it through the website when I was back, since I had feared it would be a bit too heavy for my luggage.
It has arrived now, and I think it's great. It shows all the basics first, especially different curling techniques, and then there are beautiful step-by-step instructions on how to re-create loads of different vintage styles, with pictures etc. It's certainly worth the money and has inspired me to try some new things. I want to do "more" with my hair, but find current/modern ideas in magazines etc. not very satisfying. Even if one doesn't want to do a full-blown vintage style, I think there's lots of inspiration and ideas in there.
There is also a book on vintage make-up coming by the same author. Retro Makeup.

I think it's a good book for someone who hasn't much of an idea how to do these styles, and not the biggest experience in hairstyling anyway (though I've dabbled around with heat curlers and a curling iron every now and then over the years). The author has a blog too, which I find interesting, I've been reading through some back entries.

I have that book too - in fact, the hairstyle in my user pic <------- is the "1950s housewife" style from the book. A friend followed the instructions when she set and styled it. Not sure that it's suitable for doing housework but it works for me!
