Book: \"Style & Splendor\" - Does anyone have it?

Does anyone have this book? It's a bit pricey, so I was going to try to get it on interlibrary loan, but I can't find any library that has it. I'd like to hear a review of it before I plunk down the money for it.

Thanks!

No, I don't have it.

But it sounds fascinating.

Does your local Barnes and Noble/Borders have it so you can go leaf through it before you buy it? Or museum store?

I checked it out on Amazon UK and was too tempted and walloped the credit card. Hopefully it will arrive soon. If I buy a book and it doesn't live up to expectation I sell it on Ebay and often get a nice percentage of my money back. If it arrives shortly I will give a review

I highly recommend this book. The pictures are large and detailed, the writing discusses fashion trends. You will love this book and it is beautifully presented. I don't intend on reselling my copy and I had the urge to break in and steal the entire collection LOL

I have it and read through about half of it before I got distracted and started reading something else. The information about Queen Maude's wardrobe is very interesting. SHe was thrust into the role of Queen without ever really expecting the job, so you could say she was a reluctant queen. Her taste is exquisite and her clothes are either English or Norwegian made and from lesser known dressmakers. I read the Edwardian section and thought it well researched and written. On the whole I don't know if I would recommend it because the angle for this subject is somewhat limited in interest. It does discuss the general trend in fashion but it focusses on one woman's wardrobe and where she had her clothes made, for what purposes and what she and her contemporaries thought about her wardrobe, so its forgettable text unless you are into royaliana -- on a larger scale it could have placed her clothes in context with what other members of her royal family were wearing, or have some other overall thread that brings the book's topic into a larger sphere of interest but the images are great and the book is worth it just for the eye candy. It will never become a basic text in your library but its a very pretty museum catalogue with interesting information.

Thanks for the reviews! I think I'm going to go ahead and get it.

I'm mostly interested in pictures (eye candy), so it sounds like it might suit me. I bought this book on eBay for a very cheap price, and it's worth it for the pictures. The story the book tells is fairly interesting, but my main interest is the photographs. I never would have bought it at cover price just for the photos, because there aren't enough of them.
