Bow Tie Era?

I would like to think these are 30's 40's - as that matches the woman's clothes I bought at this estate auction. They're all silk, adjustable and from "good" stores. So I was wondering about era and if there's a name for this type of bow tie. ?? :snowman: (Actually it is raining on our snow right now)

"batwing" "butterfly bat" tie. depends on which 'expert' you read!

and, research the compnay before you list, some are worth more than others.

i have a postwar 40s tie a similar pattern to the second one from the right. remember you will find linings being skipped on war time ties. Which doesn't really "mean" anything because knit ties seldom have linings so the rule is not as hard and fast as I would like so i could cheat.

what really drives the price of bowties is when they come into style. They briefly were a must have fad item about a year ago and lots of hipsters wanted them but not so much right now, but for the real oldies with interesting pattern, there is always a buyer.

I agree with asking over at the fedora lounge.

Any labels on these?

Happy Christmas 'Eve Morning to all. You all are the greatest... but you know that..

For starters, they are all marked "silk."

From left - The hunting scene says "silk-handmade" and it is from Coes & Young Co., in Boston.

All silk - U set size

The last one is DiTieri 380 Park Avenue.

I bought two boxes of ties at this auction and many of them came from Triplers in NYC and because the man had been an ambassador .... somewhere in Europe ...??? many of the regular ties have foreign labels. There are other bow ties not marked silk - include Invizo , Tarmon ,Myron W McIntyre Ltd (!!) Oh... just found another silk one. Thanks. I did register over at the Fedora Lounge.

If he was an ambassador I would look up some info on him if you know the name or know the timeframe and area he was an ambassador too. It could give the ties extra provenance. And silk=good

I would be interested to know where exactly he was an ambassador...My Grandad had a fair few bow ties like this but the fabric was really poor quality and they are all disintegrating. He used to get my Gran to make them for him out off offcuts coz he couldnt get the fabric due to rationing in the UK until the early 50s

The questions got me curious about this man. The auction was five or six years ago and I knew his name then. Somewhere I have some shirts with his name sewn into them. I don’t know where he was an ambassador, although for some reason Switzerland rings a bell. I do know it was under a Republican president, because he had all kinds of Republican party sealed stationary along with all the patriotic ties.

I think I can find his name, but I feel a little uncomfortable using that information in an auction... without his family’s permission.

I sold a few of his ties for more than $50 each. There were two generations of mens’ garments at this sale, because some of the ties were more 70’s and some were more 30’s/40’s.

I was just looking through the “tie box” and there are quite a few Saks Fifth Avenue, Lanvin, Dior, etc. Lots of early Trippler tags and some from Switzerland. There are also about ten ties with “Mieres Y Compania San Rafael 54 La Habana.” Huh. I just realized - Cuba??? Somewhere in the pile there are quite a few German tags as well.

Somebody got around. I thought it was cool to find a few silk (soie) Original Lillian Dache paris New York labels, although I don’t care for the abstract design. Guess I should go into the tie business for a while!
