Buying.... and buying... on vacation

Just got back from vacationing at the Jersey shore, and, much to our delight or dismay (not sure which yet--LOL, as we spent "too much" money!), we found a few places to shop for vintage & collectibles. An antique co-op in Cape May, a sort of thrift/collectibles/antique shop also in Cape May, and a marvelous co-op just 30 miles or so from home, which we discovered on our way back. Not sure why DH & I haven't found this one before; thought we knew where they all were around here!

Anyway, picked up some really cute things. Several hats, among them a Gwen Pennington (I love her hats) felt bubble beret, Norman-Paulvin New York blue velvet swirled turban-style cap, a 50's straw hat that's sort of like a small platter hat crossed with a Chinese hat--not sure what the style is called. Plus a really sharp fit 'n' flare wool winter coat (which I shall be posting to Q & A because I'm so unsure of the date) and an Alex Colman California 70's maxi skirt. A red satin clutch purse that I think I'll be keeping for myself....

Some of the nicest finds in a while; don't usually find a lot in vintage apparel & accessories while vacationing. Especially stuff that's affordable! One booth at the last co-op had dozens upon dozens of hats--more than I've ever seen in one shop before, loads of handbags and shoes, etc. I coulda spent 2 or 3 hours there. Must go back.....

DH found some nice collectibles for himself as well.

Has anyone else here done their yearly vacation/buy stock trip yet? I know I posted on this topic when we first planned our vacation, and would love to hear of others' finds!

Sounds like you had a great buying trip as well as a vacation!

I hadn't had a vacation in many years prior to last year and we were so limited on space for luggage etc, they would have thrown me out of the car if I had bought anything extra. Always on the outlook, though, and if something I want, I would hold on my lap all 14 hours of the trip back home!

We had an early vacation - end of May. Made sure to check out the antique malls. Didn't find any clothing :( but found a cool pair of art deco vases for the house at quite a reasonable price. (Art deco is much more popular here in Chicago than down state).
We also stopped by a small town flea market and I found a beautiful little green and black (plastic?) "stone" bracelet from the 20s/30s. Again, it was the lack of interest in art deco design out in these rural areas that helped. I would have had to add a 1 in front of the price of both those items if I tried to buy them in the city.

I was in CA a few weeks ago for the Deco Show. I did find a cople of dresses, two handbags and a hat. I found this great pin in a shop in Senora. I would put a (1) in front of what I paid if I was going to sell it - but I'm not!!!

I almost always "shop" on vacations.

Which direction are you headed Angie? If you're ever in the K.C. area, I can show you some spots.

Good to know that I'm not the only one who considers "vacations" buying trips. I haven't had a holiday in years but have been away three times in the last 18 months writing for the Book. I had to vary my literary tasks with checking out all the local second hand shops and brought back some great booty.

The pin is plastic. I think the red fan shaped piece is Bakelite, and the rest of it is Celluloid. It is light weight and "smells" like Celluloid. The fan shaped piece is heavier.

I really like it!
