Can anyone help with this brooch?

Looking foe some advice/opinions on the date of this brooch! It looks quite old - I'm guessing at early 20th century but I really have no idea! All I can really tell you about its background is that I bought it in France roughly early 80's from a second hand shop. It was mixed in with much newer looking items mainly 50s 60s stuff. It's a lovely looking little piece in the flesh, roughly 1 inch square. Sorry for the bad pictures which actually make it look more distressed than it looks at real size. The tiny central stone is actually pale greyish in natural light. Any opinions much appreciated!

This one is tough! I agree with you on your dating - C. 1900 although it could go a few years in either direction. I have been trying to find something comparable and have not come up with anything. I'm not sure what the significance is of the hearts and clover - if there is one. The piece doesn't really call out to me that it is from a particular Period but I agree it is definitely older.

You have an early "modern" hinge - one that would have been used after 1890. The pin stem is very long and protrudes past the piece which is a characteristic of Victorian jewelry - but it's thick so it couldn't have been worn on delicate fabrics or it would tear them.

I know more about jewelry that's a little bit later, so I, too, hope someone that knows comes along to identify it!

Thanks for this. I've been doing a bit of 'hearts and clover' googling myself - so far no joy though!

That is a lovely pin, and though I don't know a whole lot about older jewelry, I'd have guessed very late 1800s to very early 1900s, too.

Could the hearts and clover be a Celtic theme?

Have been away for a few days but thankyou everyone for your help. Thanks for that link GoldenAge - what an interesting area to research!
