This reply from Debenhams, I can't believe this jacket is 1800's? Anyone tips on this?

"Thank you for your email.
When Clement Freebody invested in the firm in 1851 it was renamed Debenham & Freebody. As well as its retail stores, a wholesale business was established selling cloth and other items to dressmakers and other large retailers.
However, you due to the era of the jacket being in the 1800s, we do not have any information on file for this garment.
I am sorry that I could not assist you further.
Kind regards,
Cassey

Hello,

I suspect this might be the top of pair of men's lounging pajamas. If it is a jacket, then it has a very ethnic flair to it. And no, it does not look at all like it is from the 1800s.

Great fabric, and a great label.

Thanks for adding the photos, more details, and adding a photo of the inside of the jacket. Now that you show that it is lined, then "no" it is not pajamas.

It does have a definite Ethnic style to it, almost Pakistani or India inspired. The metallic threads are indicative of those region's textiles also.

My guess is it is from the 1950s or 1960s time period. The Queen they refer to is Elizabeth, not Victoria. If it were earlier than 1952, I would expect the label would say "King" and not Queen.

Brilliant points, thanks! Strange that Debenhams sent that reply! The jacket has become quite a mystery! All I know is that Lady Worsley Taylor gave it to my grandmother (who kept everything), who in turn gave it to me approx 1980

I wonder where in the world Debenhams customer services is based, that reply strikes me as very automated-sounding, perhaps a cut and paste answer with one line of personal input which contained a typo - if you told them you received it in 1980 they may have been trying to say 1980's, not 1800s.

I think it is a 1960s evening jacket, to go over a shift dress. I agree with Deborah, as the label features our Queen's royal warrant it must be post 1952.

I didn't tell them dates at all and given their account of one-sentence history I'm guessing that was a careless reference based on the picture of the label! You may be right about it being an automated reply!
The time frame around 1960 sounds likely. Wish I could find more details but I've scoured internet images and can't find anything similar. Thanks for the input though!

You have to keep in mind this is a retailer's label - Debenham and Freebody were a department store, not a garment brand. It could have been made by a brand they sold, or specially for them to sell under their own label, or some department stores sometimes had an area customers could have things made to order, though I don't know if they were still doing this by the 60s. I have several pairs of shoes with the D&F label & the warrant, but not the draper part. I suppose it is more relevant on a fabric item than footwear.

Really very interesting! Thanks so much all for the input, so nice to have more of a clue and the information is all very interesting!
