Can I get help with this B. Altman fur jacket? Thanks!

I got this because I really like this but I am big time fur deficient and have no idea what it is?

I'm thinking the entire jacket is fur.. the jacket "fur" is very short but soft, the collar "fur" is baby fine and extremely soft - hair is about 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches long. Is this angora?

Can I steam this from the inside to take the wrinkles out?

I'm trying to get it ready to list tommorrow. Someone on the E-bay boards thinks it is white mink, does anyone else think it is mink? I just put it on.. (it is really cute).. and it is about a size 8.

The collar looks like white mink, and if the closer fur is 'floppy' and drapes like cloth, I would guess that it's kid.

The jacket does have a crushed velvet look to it. I've never seen white mink before - only the darker mink and the hairs on this are finer if that makes sense. After researching I'm guessing it could be female mink instead of male as I've been reading that the fur is much finer if that makes sense. I searched rabbit and it doesn't look like rabbit, and I searched fox and it doesn't look like fox, I actually searched a bunch of furs and in the end I am thinking it is a white mink collar. If there were a furrier close I would take it there - although I will be in the city tommorrow and perhaps there is a furrier there.

Backtracking on my earlier post (sorry, I should sleep before I think...):

Kid is a shorter fur, but (Mary Jane jogged my brain this time...) it's broadtail lamb or karakul that has the crushed velvet or moire look. How does your coat compare to the black karakul in the fur resource (under "sheep and lamb")?

Here's a link to a site with more pics to compare with (which says that white karakul is the most expensive kind):

And here's an interesting bit on the origin of the word "swakara", from a 1988 NY Times article:

"Making a strong reappearance in the fall-winter fur shows last week was Persian lamb and its intriguing-sounding variant, swakara. The name is derived from the initials of South-West Africa and the first letters of karakul, a type of lamb. Karakul sheep were introduced to South-West Africa by German settlers before World War I. Today South-West Africa is ruled by South Africa in defiance of the United Nations, which revoked South Africa's mandate in 1966, and an insurgency that seeks to make the country an independent black-ruled country called Namibia."

I know I should never sell fur as I am really don't know much about it!!! Having said that, this is the third fur coat I have had to sell - I had a black rabbit fur coat and the hair on that was finer and you could somewhat see the pelt and the hair shed a little, I had a Lilli Ann wool suit that was trimmed in mink - different color and different texture than this.

I researched Karakul and if this is karakul it would have to be a pelt from a fetus or newly born as I read that the fetus/newly born is straighter (kind of sad really). I'm still not sure what the collar is but I have taken better pics and I might just list and say that I do not know what it is and just call it fur. Not ideal but that is the honest truth. It is really a beautiful piece and I'll sell it on it's visual value if not its fur value.

I don't sell a lot of coats either but yesterday was a killer day for coats, I got quite a few and one of them I got is a lovely light purple mohair Trigere Swing coat so either way (knowing or not knowing the fur when I list) it is all good.

the collar look like rabbit to me, are you sure the body of the coat isn't faux, I have a similar coat that is faux, is there a way to see behind the lining? (maybe in the back or a cuff)

I'm now thinking that the body of the jacket is faux and that it is white rabbit. When I first got it I thought it was rabbit (see my first post) and then someone said mink. I finally found a white rabbit stole - vintage 50's - listed on someones site and the collar looks like that stole. I think I'll be safe saying that it is rabbit.

And no, I couldn't take it apart because it is pristine - instead I held it up to a window to see thru it and I could see that it isn't a pelt.

that's a good idea, never thought of that :duh2: I ususally peek behind lining, if the stiches are those long running ones, but holding it up would be easier, gotta remember that
