hi everyone!
ive been browsing this section recently and you all seem very knowledgeable so im hoping youll be able to help me!
i have checked out the fur resource and past posts but am still none the wiser to what i have!

i picked up this coat in a charity shop in my home town so really dont know its history and have compared it to other furs i already have but still nothing!

the pelts seem relatively small and the fur is the softest i have ever felt. i know its a daft comparison but i have a bengal cat and this fur has the same glittery shimmer he has to his coat.

the fur is darker at the roots and the tips are almost striped white and silver brown. could it be sheared something or other?

and here ive put it next to two jackets labeled coney fur and french rabbit. its so much softer and finer than these other two but just so you could perhaps get a clearer idea with it laid next to others.

thank you so much! any help would be greatly appreciated! the lining is a gorgeous dusky purple colour and initials embroidered on the inside. just incase that helps at all with dating - perhaps different lining colours were used at different time periods? im unsure.

thanks again!

I agree with Jody. I have a coat with a very similar look. It was identified as muskrat by my local furrier.

I definitely think it's grey squirrel. I have a stole made from this that was confirmed as grey squirrel from a local furrier. It almost has a crimped look about it. I'll see if i can post a picture.

Can't help much with date. How does it fasten?

thank you for your help so far!
Emily it fastens with 3 hooks i think it is. there are also two pieces of ribbon which tie to the other side of the coat. these come from under the arm.

and i just thought id add another picture so you can see the base of the fur incase that helps any and one of the front!

thank you!

Hi,

I think it is squirrel. Squirrel is very very soft, and this coat looks exactly like several squirrel jackets I have had in the past. The small pelts add to that. Muskrat is usually glossier, and is not as powdery soft and dense.

on the squirrel line of investigation ive now found two very similar looking items..
the first was query squirrel by an online seller and the second listed as such.

can i just say how refreshing it is to come across such a helpful forum. i really hope i can offer some opinion or pass on some knowledge sometime soon aswell!

Here's my squirrel stole- complete with heads and tails:

I'm still unsure about the date of yours, but I'm sure others will weigh in. I'm tempted to say solidly 50's, but I'm sure others will be able to confirm.

thanks Jody for the link!
i wonder where on earth something like that would have been worn!!?
im picturing some gorgeous snow chalet, fire on, fondue at the ready! haha
