Hello, I actually saw another coat similar to this that was ca. 1883 but it was part of a three piece ensemble.

Can you please help me to accurately date this? Also what is the correct name for a coat like this?

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

I agree with 1880's, right around 1885 (give or take a couple of years either way). That small collar was very popular then. It is more of a jacket than a coat. The silhouette is similar to a mid 1880s walking jacket, but the silk is more formal. I do think it had more parts to it, as the front seems rather plain. It is almost like a mantle, but the sleeves are too form fitting to be called that.

Lovely.

Thanks Barbara. I appreciate your help.

I have a few more questions about it too.

What would I title a jacket like this?

Would I call it a Victorian Fringed Quilted Silk Jacket?

Also, should I leave this garment as is or try restoration of the little flaws before offering it?

As ever, Barbara is on top of it.

I just took a tour though the Dover Harper's Bazaar book, and while they do occasionally use the term mantle for a fitted sleeve outer garment, more often it's just coat or jacket. Pelisse would be full length. A visite or dolman would not have completely fitted sleeves like this. And most of us now associate mantle with a cape.

They did caption fitted sleeves outer garments as coats and jackets, and I agree jacket would be the clearest term for the modern buyer.

I'd leave it as is unless the restoration is simply sewing popped seams or re-tacking loose trim.

Hi Hollis, Yeah...there are no loose seams. Just areas that you can see where black silk has deteriorated and the color looks light.
Thank you
